If Ryan Ellis has anything to say about it, the Eastern Conference’s winning streak at the OHL All-Star Game is about to come to an end.
Ellis, the Windsor Spitfires’ standout defenceman is the captain of the Western Conference squad for the 2010 OHL All-Star Classic in Kingston, and said that he expects his team to win on Wednesday and cutting the East’s streak off at four.
“We had a lot of fun in the skills competition in Windsor last year and I think we’re probably going to win that one and as for the game tomorrow, I think our team looks a lot better than theirs so we’ll probably win that one too,” Ellis told a laughing group of media at the meet the players press conference in Kingston Tuesday afternoon.
“I’m just putting it out there that we’re probably going to win both events. I think it’s pretty clear we’re going to win.”
The Western Conference won three straight games before the Eastern Conference got on the board with a 9-3 win in the 2006 game in Belleville.
“The East has won five in a row (actually four) and hopefully we can get another one,” said Barrie Colts’ defenceman Alex Piestrangelo, who was teammates with Ellis on the Canadian National Junior team at Christmas. “We’re looking forward to having a couple of good days - it should be fun.”
The East cruised to an 11-6 win in last year’s game at the WFCU Centre in Windsor.
The OHL All-Star Classic kicks off with the All-Star Skills Competition and Three-on Three game tonight followed by the OHL Alumni game and then the 2010 OHL All-Star Classic on Wednesday (7:00 p.m. on Rogers Sportsnet). Tickets for both events are still available.
