156 OHL Alumni Listed on 2018-19 NHL Opening Night Rosters

The Ontario Hockey League is proud to announce that 156 former players were listed on opening night rosters for the 2018-19 National Hockey League season.

The 156 names represent active players which comprises over 20% of the league’s 31 teams.  An additional 23 players were listed on injured reserve to start the new campaign.

156 OHL graduates leads the entire Canadian Hockey League with 128 former Western Hockey League players listed on opening night rosters along with 67 from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for an overall figure of 351 representing nearly 50% of the entire NHL.

Headlining the list are five recent alumni who competed in the OHL last season.  Those players include Rookie of the Year Andrei Svechnikov (Barrie/Carolina), top scoring defenceman Evan Bouchard (London/Edmonton), World Junior gold medalist Alex Formenton (London/Ottawa), Player of the Year Jordan Kyrou (Sarnia/St. Louis), and Playoff MVP Robert Thomas (Hamilton/St. Louis).

Svechnikov, Bouchard, Formenton, and Thomas are underage talents eligible to return along with Barrett Hayton (Sault Ste. Marie/Arizona) and Gabriel Vilardi (Kingston/Los Angeles) who are presently listed on the injured reserve.

All 20 OHL organizations have graduated at least three players on current NHL rosters.  The London Knights lead the way with an impressive 24 players listed, followed by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds with 13, the Barrie Colts with 12, the Erie Otters with 11, and 10 from each of the Plymouth Whalers (Flint Firebirds) and Windsor Spitfires.

The Ottawa Senators feature the most OHL talent with 10 former players followed by the Los Angeles Kings with nine.  The Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes, and Dallas Stars each have eight, while the Arizona Coyotes, St. Louis Blues, and Toronto Maple Leafs are next with seven each.  All 31 NHL clubs have at least one former OHL player.

The OHL continues to be a leading supplier of talent to the NHL.
