2013 Minor Midget Players of the Year
Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced the six recipients of Minor Hockey Player of the Year Awards for players representing the four Ontario Hockey Federation Member Partners including the ALLIANCE, Greater Toronto Hockey League, Northern Ontario Hockey Association, and Ontario Minor Hockey Association, along with Hockey Northwestern Ontario and the Ottawa District Minor Hockey Association.
Five of the six winners are currently competing at the 2013 OHL Cup and include Travis Konecny of the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs named ALLIANCE Player of the Year, Dylan Strome of the Toronto Marlboros named GTHL Player of the Year, Zach Grzelewski of the Thunder Bay Kings named HNO Player of the Year, Blake Speers of the Sault Thunder named NOHA Player of the Year, Andrew Peski of the Ottawa Jr. 67’s named OEMHL Player of the Year, and Matt Spencer of the Oakville Rangers was named OMHA Player of the Year.
“Congratulations to all six award winners and to their proud families, coaches, and teammates for a tremendous hockey season,” said OHL Commissioner David Branch. “Players are the most important part of our game and it is important to recognize the achievements of these great players.”
Konecny, a 5’10’’, 165lb forward, scored 53 goals and 61 assists for 114 points in 54 games played this season for the ALLIANCE Champion Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs.
Strome, at 6’2’’, and 165lb, is a forward who scored 65 goals and 78 assists for 143 points in 60 games played with the GTHL Champion Toronto Marlboros.
Grzelewski, a 5’11’’, 190lb forward with the Thunder Bay Kings collected 80 points in 50 games played scoring 38 goals and 42 assists.
Speers, a 5’10’’, 160lb forward with the Sault Thunder of the NOHA scored 43 goals and 70 assists for 113 points in 61 games played.
Peski, a 6’0’’, 180lb defenceman with the Ottawa Jr. 67’s had three goals and 12 assists for 15 points in 30 games played.
Spencer, at 6’2’’ and 190lb, plays defence for the OMHA Champion Oakville Rangers where he scored 17 goals and 39 assists for 56 points in 71 games.
The awards were presented at the OHL Cup Showcase Tournament Banquet for the third straight year recognizing the achievements of the top minor midget aged players from across Ontario. The awards are presented annually to honour the minor midget players who best exemplify outstanding ability and the qualities of sportsmanship and leadership as voted by the minor hockey coaches, managers and organizations of each respective league.
