2017 Battle of the Border Recap

The fourth annual ‘Battle of the Border’ Showcase in partnership with the Ontario Hockey League and the High Performance Hockey League wrapped up on Sunday at Windsor’s WFCU Centre, home of the OHL’s Spitfires.

The event featured 24 teams from across Ontario, Detroit, and Illinois competing in two divisions with Under-16 talent eligible for the 2018 OHL Priority Selection and for the first time in four years included Under-18 players eligible for the 2018 OHL Under-18 Priority Selection.

Minor midget teams representing Ontario include the Mississauga Reps (GTHL), North York Rangers (GTHL), Sun County Panthers (ALLIANCE), Toronto Jr. Canadiens (GTHL), Vaughan Kings (GTHL), and York Simcoe Express (OMHA-ETA).

Major midget teams representing Ontario include the Central Ontario Wolves (OMHA-SCTA), Clarington Toros (OMHA-ETA), Guelph Gryphons (OMHA-SCTA), Huron Perth Lakers (ALLIANCE), London Jr. Knights (ALLIANCE), and Waterloo Wolves (ALLIANCE).

HPHL teams in both U16 and U18 divisions include Chicago Mission, Chicago Young Americans, Detroit Compuware, Detroit Honeybaked, Oakland Grizzlies, and Team Illinois.

In addition to the action on the ice, the OHL hosted seminars and information sessions for players and their families focusing on areas such as the league’s scholarship program, professional support programs, development opportunities, benefits, player environment and safety, along with health and welfare programs.  Players also had the opportunity to attend Saturday’s OHL game between the Spitfires and visiting Kitchener Rangers.

The United States captured the ‘Battle of the Border’ title for the fourth straight year winning 80-28 using a format that combined results from both divisions awarding three points for a regulation win, two points for an overtime or shootout win, and a single point for an overtime or shootout loss.

In the Minor Midget category, Chicago Mission and Detroit Compuware were the top performing American teams both finishing the exhibition series with perfect 3-0 records.  The Vaughan Kings were the top performing Canadian team winning all three of their games.

Chicago Mission, Detroit Compuware, and Team Illinois all finished with three wins to lead the Major Midget category, with the Waterloo Wolves accumulating seven points including two victories and an overtime loss to lead the Canadian side.
