6th Annual OHL Coaches Conference covers wide range of subjects

Sixty coaches from across the province converged on Oshawa Saturday for the 6th Annual OHL Coaches Conference held on the campus of UOIT.

Six different presenting speakers spoke on a wide variety of subject matter ranging from coach development and growth to identifying effective ways to generate more offence out of defencemen.

“As a league we really believe the holistic approach for our players is so very important and it should be no different for coaches whether they’re in our league or up-and-coming coaching various levels across the province,” said OHL Vice-President of Development Joe Birch. “It’s really important that we don’t just focus on the x’s and o’s on the ice, not just the technical but we really help our coaches learn how important it is to understand the player, how to communicate to players and how to communicate to parents.”

Guest speakers included OHL graduates in long-time professional defenceman Jay Harrison and Providence Bruins assistant coach Ryan Mougenel. Saginaw Spirit head coach Chris Lazary, a former attendee of the conference, also presented while other voices included Erie Otters assistant coach Wes Wolfe and former OHL head coach Troy Smith, currently with the SJHL’s Humboldt Broncos.

“If we’re going to really be invested in developing hockey players we have to be really invested in developing our coaches and that’s what today’s about,” Birch added.

Jack Veitch, Manager of Community Engagement and Education at CMHA Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge also delivered an informative presentation pertaining to how coaches can better support parents as they embark on their child’s journey both on and off the ice.

All coaches in attendance received three certification maintenance points toward their Hockey Canada coaching levels.
