Bulldogs promote Dave Matsos to Head Coach

Hamilton Bulldogs

Hamilton, ON – Hamilton Bulldogs President and General Manager Steve Staios announced this morning that Dave Matsos has been named the team’s new head coach.

Matsos spent the 2017-2018 season as the Bulldogs associate coach and helped lead the team to an OHL Championship and a berth in the 100th Memorial Cup.

“Dave came in last year and was a massive part of our championship season.” says Staios. “He’s been a head coach in our league and has the respect of our players and has an understanding of our team identity.” “He’s been a winner at all levels as a coach as well as a Memorial Cup winner as a player.”

Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Matsos spent four seasons with the Sudbury Wolves, serving the last two-and-a-half as head coach after beginning his OHL coaching career as an assistant coach with the Windsor Spitfires for three seasons.

Matsos says he’s excited to take on this challenge. “The Bulldogs have a vision in place from ownership all the way down.” says Matsos.  “With this being my 9th year in the league, I am confident I know our players, the league and have what it takes to have success.

The 44-year old native of Burlington began his coaching career in England in 2006 where he guided the Sheffield Steelers to three straight championships.

The Bulldogs also announced that Vince Laise has been promoted to associate coach. The 35-year old Brampton native is entering his third season with the Bulldogs after spending three years as an assistant coach with the OHL’s Erie Otters.

“Vince stepped up and took on the added responsibility given to him last season by head coach John Gruden and executed, and I am confident he is ready for this new challenge.” says Staios. “He has excelled in his short time as a coach at this level and I am excited to see him grow in his new role.”
