Callaghan, Whitson and Zuyev commit to Steelheads
Callaghan, a Toronto, Ont. native, and product of the Mississauga Reps (GTHL), was selected by the Steelheads in the eighth round (#148 overall) in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. The 5-foot-7”, 179Ib. defenceman registered 20 points (6 goals, 14 assists) in 33 games last season. “Charlie has had a great summer of training and continues to impress our coaching staff,” said Steelheads head coach and general manager James Richmond. “We look forward to seeing Charlie in the blue and white in Mississauga in the very near future.”
Whitson, a product of the Central Ontario Wolves, is no stranger to the scoresheet. The 5-foot-6”, 123Ib. right winger registered 50 points (20 goals, 30 assists) in 34 games last season. James Richmond describes the Uxbridge, Ont. native as a “dynamic skilled forward” that has turned heads at camp, adding “we think Carson will be a very good OHLer very soon.”
Last but not least, the third player to commit to the Steelheads is Nikita Zuyev. Zuyev was selected from Team Belarus’ U20 team with the Steelheads’ second round selection (24th overall) in the 2018 CHL Import Draft. After spending the 2017-18 season in the Belarus men’s league, the 5-foot-11” 172Ib. defenceman has a lot of potential in making an immediate impact in the Ontario Hockey League as the Steelheads’ second Import Draft player.
