#CANvsRUS Game 3 Notes

CIBC Canada/Russia Series

2018 CIBC CANADA RUSSIA SERIES

TEAM OHL vs. TEAM RUSSIA

GAME NOTES

QUICK HITS

  • 2018 marks the 16th CIBC Canada Russia Series, an annual event that dates back to 2003 when current day NHL talent in Corey Perry (London Knights) and Jeff Carter (Soo Greyhounds) competed.
  • The CHL holds an all-time record of 62-23-1-6 in the event, while Russia won its 30th game in event history on Tuesday in Vancouver.
  • The OHL holds an all-time record of 24-5-1-0 in the CIBC Canada Russia Series and is 10-5 in their first encounter with Russia. The Russians have won five of the last six Game 3 meetings.
  • This marks the third straight year that the OHL inherits a tied series and the sixth time in the history of the event that the scenario has arisen. Team OHL has split decisions with Russia in each of the past two years but the CHL ultimately went on to take the series both times.
  • The CIBC Canada Russia Series returns to Sarnia for a CHL record-tying fourth time and first since 2012. The OHL has won each of the past three meetings in Sarnia, with the latest coming on a Frankie Corrado (Sudbury Wolves) third period game winner on Nov. 14, 2012 in a 2-1 decision.

SERIES NOTES

PHILLIPS, TIPPETT SUIT UP IN THIRD SERIES: Team OHL 19-year-olds Markus Phillips (Owen Sound Attack) and Owen Tippett (Mississauga Steelheads) each appear in their third CIBC Canada Russia Series. Both are former first round OHL Priority Selection choices.

STROME ADDED TO TEAM OHL LINEUP: With an injury to Akil Thomas (Niagara IceDogs), Philadelphia Flyers prospect Matthew Strome (Hamilton Bulldogs) joins tonight’s Team OHL lineup. Strome will suit up alongside fellow Flyers prospects in Morgan Frost (Soo Greyhounds) and Isaac Ratcliffe (Guelph Storm). Strome helped guide the Hamilton Bulldogs to an OHL Championship last spring.

FIVE OHL REINFORCEMENTS FOR RUSSIA: Team Russia will have some fresh legs in tonight’s lineup. World Junior returnee Dmitri Samorukov (Guelph Storm), teammate Alexey Toropchenko (Guelph Storm), Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Alexey Lipanov (Kitchener Rangers), Edmonton Oilers pick Kirill Maksimov (Niagara IceDogs) and goaltender Ivan Prosvetov (Saginaw Spirit) have been added to the roster.
