Dudas, Roberts, Thomas Named WU17 Assistant Captains

Hockey Canada announced Friday that rookie forwards Aidan Dudas (Owen Sound Attack), Connor Roberts (Hamilton Bulldogs) and Akil Thomas (Niagara IceDogs) will serve as assistant captains with their respective Canadian teams at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

The 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge gets underway on Sunday in Sault Ste. Marie, ON as Team Canada Red, Team Canada White and Team Canada Black battle compete for gold in an eight team tournament that also includes The United States, Finland, Sweden, Russia and the Czech Republic.

A 16-year-old native of Parry Sound, Ont., Dudas will wear an ‘A’ with Team Canada Black. The 5-foot-8, 156Ib. centreman has two goals through his first 12 games of the 2016-17 season with the Attack, scoring his first career OHL goal as part of a two goal effort on October 9th in Sault Ste. Marie. A graduate of the North Central Predators Minor Midgets, Dudas, who was the OMHA ETA Minor Midget Player of the Year last season, was Owen Sound’s first round (10th 0verall) pick in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection. Dudas had a goal and two assists in six games for at the Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway last February, helping guide Canada to a silver medal finish.

Hamilton Bulldogs forward Connor Roberts will serve as an assistant captain with Team Canada Red. The 16-year-old native of Owen Sound, Ont. has two goals, three assists and five points through his first 12 games with the Bulldogs this season. The 6-foot-4, 215Ib. centreman was the OMHA-SCTA’s Minor Midget Player of the Year last season, being selected by the Bulldogs in the first round (3rd overall) of the 2016 OHL Priority Selection. Roberts helped Canada claim silver at the Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway last February, recording three goals and an assist in six games.

Niagara IceDogs forward Akil Thomas will wear an ‘A’ for Team Canada White. A 16-year-old native of Brandon, Florida, Thomas has three goals, three assists and six points in 11 games with the IceDogs. The 5-foot-11, 163Ib. centreman is a graduate of the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midgets and was Niagara’s first round (12th overall) pick in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection.

The 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge gets underway on Sunday as Team Canada Red takes on Finland at 12:00pm and Team Canada Black battles Team Canada White at 4:00pm.
