Friday Highlights: Szypula shines again
OWEN SOUND 4 – KINGSTON 3 – OT
Ethan Szypula (10, 11, 12) followed up a four-point night on Thursday with a hat-trick, scoring the overtime winner in a 4-3 Owen Sound Attack road win over the Kingston Frontenacs. Goaltender Olivier Lafreniere picked up an assist on the OT winner as the Attack won their sixth straight game and ninth in the last 10, climbing into a sixth place tie with Saginaw. Brady Lyle and Alan Lyszczarczyk both had two assists while Lafreniere made 34 saves, putting an end to Kingston’s six-game winning streak. Linus Nyman (29, 30) scored twice to help the Fronts earn a single point while defenceman Jakob Brahaney (5) also found the twine. Cliff Pu and Gabriel Vilardi picked up assists on all three goals as the Fronts were outshot 43-37.
GUELPH 4 – SAGINAW 3 – OT
Philadelphia Flyers prospect Isaac Ratcliffe (30) snapped home the overtime winner, giving the Guelph Storm two big points in a 4-3 win over the visiting Saginaw Spirit. Guelph’s third straight win saw the Storm climb ahead of the Spirit for a fourth place tie in the Western Conference. Cam Hillis (19) had a goal and two assists, drawing a helper on the overtime winner while Dmitri Samorukov (8) and Cedric Ralph (19) also capitalized. Saginaw’s Nicholas Porco (4) tied the score at three with six minutes left in the third period to help his team earn a point. Cole Coskey (24) and Camaryn Baber (1) also scored for Saginaw while defenceman Hayden Davis picked up two assists. The Storm improves to 3-0 against Saginaw this season with one encounter left on the schedule.
SUDBURY 6 – FLINT 3
2018 NHL Draft prospect David Levin (9, 10, 11) scored his first OHL hat-trick, helping the Sudbury Wolves snap a five-game slide with a 6-3 win over the visiting Flint Firebirds. Macauley Carson (6), Kirill Nizhnikov (9) and Shane Bulitka (6) also scored while Marshall Frappier made 31 saves in goal. Carson finished the night with a goal and two assists as the Wolves improved to 14-32-6-0. Flint’s third straight loss featured goals from C.J. Clarke (11), Riley McCourt (4) and Jake Durham (6).
MISSISSIAUGA 6 – BARRIE 4
Vegas Golden Knights prospect Nicolas Hague (27, 28) continued to light the lamp, scoring twice in a hard fought Mississauga Steelheads 2-0 win over the Barrie Colts. Overage forward Mathieu Foget (15, 16) had two goals and an assist while other Mississauga goals came from Albert Michnac (20) and Owen Tippett (22). Emanuel Vella made 37 saves as the Steelheads were outshot 41-36. Down 5-2, the Colts managed to pull within a goal but couldn’t come all the way back. Lucas Chiodo (17, 18) had two goals and an assist while Andrei Svechnikov (30) and Jaden Peca (12) also tallied. Barrie falls to 30-19-2-1 while Mississauga climbs seven points ahead of eighth place Peterborough with a 24-26-0-1 record.
LONDON 4 – ERIE 1
The London Knights ended a three-game slide as Liam Foudy (11, 12) and Nathan Dunkley (16) both had three points in a 4-1 win over the visiting Erie Otters. Billy Moskal (3) also pitched in with a goal and an assist while Joseph Raaymakers stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced. Erie’s Josh Wainman (3) ended Raaymakers’ shutout bid midway through the third period. London improves to 27-20-2-2, sitting tied for fourth with Guelph in the Western Conference.
