St. Catharines, ON – The Niagara IceDogs are proud to announce that 2017 10th round OHL Priority Draft selection Mason Howard has signed a Standard Player Contract with the team.
The London, Ont. native has spent the season with the Thorold Blackhawks of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League and experienced one of the most successful campaigns for a 16-year old defenceman in GOJHL history.
Howard compiled a remarkable nine goals and 35 points over just 49 games, helping lead a young Thorold team to a playoff appearance.
For his efforts, he was nominated for the Dave Dunham Trophy, which is awarded to the league’s Most Valuable Defenceman.
IceDogs’ General Manager Joey Burke was excited to confirm the signing, saying “It is a very exciting day for our organization to be able to sign a player of Mason’s calibre. He brings an element to our team that is unmatched.
“With him spending the season in Thorold, we have been able to consistently watch his development this season, and the steps forward he has already taken have been remarkable to see. We truly believe that the best is yet to come for Mason.”
Howard was chosen by the IceDogs from the London Jr. Knights Minor Midgets, a team he recording five goals, 20 assists and 25 points with in 32 games last season. He pitched in with five points (2-3–5) in six games with the Jr. Knights at the 2017 OHL Cup Powered by Under Armour.
