Top Pick Matt Schmalz Commits to Rangers

Kitchener Rangers Head Coach and General Manager Steve Spott has announced that the team has signed their 2012 first round selection Matt Schmalz to an Ontario Hockey League contract.

Schmalz spent the 2011-12 regular season with the Southern Tier Admirals Minor Midget. In 35 games he tallied 23 goals and 18 assists for 41 points and 40 PIM.

Matt is a big right shot centreman who has the ability to control the play with excellent vision of the ice. He uses his size well and is able to protect the puck. He is a powerful skater that will add size to the Rangers line-up, according to Rangers Head Scout Murray Hiebert.

“We were looking to add size and skill to the Rangers forward group and Matt gives us a good combination of both. He is a welcome addition to the team.” – Steve Spott.
