Saturday Highlights: Rangers keep rolling on Sportsnet

 

KITCHENER 3 – BARRIE 1
The Kitchener Rangers were victorious in the season premiere of Sportsnet’s CHL Saturday Showcase, winning for the seventh time in the past eight games. Philadelphia Flyers prospect Connor Bunnaman scored the shorthanded game winner on a breakaway 3:26 into the third period as the Blueshirts took a 3-1 win in Barrie. Chris McGonigle earned first star honours in his first start of the season, making 30 saves as the Rangers improved to a Midwest Division-leading 14-6-2-0. Adam Liska (4) and Kole Sherwood (8) provided other Kitchener goals as the Rangers outshot the Colts 38-31. Jason Willms (11) opened the scoring with Barrie’s lone goal while goaltender Leo Lazarev made 35 saves in the loss. The Colts continue to lead the Central Division with a record of 12-6-1-1.

SAGINAW 5 – OWEN SOUND 3
Brady Gilmour set up Marcus Crawford (5, 6) for the game winner with 6:09 left in the third period as the Saginaw Spirit continued their improved play with a 5-3 win over visiting Owen Sound. Both Crawford and fellow defenceman Caleb Everett (2, 3) scored twice while Cole Coskey (10) hit the empty net and Gilmour collected three assists as the Spirit won despite being outshot 33-26. Saginaw’s Cameron Lamour made 30 saves in goal to earn his first win of the season. Owen Sound’s Jonah Gadjovich (9, 10) had a pair of goals in the loss while Maksim Sushko (10) also tallied. The Attack fall to 11-7-0-2, six points back of first place Kitchener in the Midwest Division. The Spirit have now won four straight at home.

ERIE 5 – FLINT 2
The Erie Otters snapped a nine game road losing skid as Ivan Lodnia (13), Owen Headrick (5), Jordan Sambrook (5), Maxim Golod (4) and Taylor Raddysh (10) all scored in a 5-2 road victory over the Flint Firebirds. Headrick and Raddysh both finished with a goal and an assist while Kyle Makismovich had a pair of helpers. Erie outshot Flint 38-27, improving to 9-10-2-1. Troy Timpano made 25 saves in the Erie crease, surrendering Flint goals by Nicolas Mattinen (3) and Ty Dellandrea (7). Flint falls to 7-12-2-0 and has just one win in the past 10 games.

HAMILTON 5 – OTTAWA 2
A three-goal first period gave the Hamilton Bulldogs enough to get by the Ottawa 67’s 5-2 on the road as New Jersey Devils prospect Marian Studenic (6) led the way with a goal and three assists. Big winger Matthew Strome (10, 11) had a pair of goals in the win while Montreal Canadiens prospect Will Bitten (4) had a goal and two assists. Rookie forward Arthur Kaliyev (8) also scored for the Dogs while goaltender Nick Donofrio turned aside a career-high 37 saves and improved to 3-0-0-1. The Bulldogs climb into first place in the East Division with a 12-6-1-3 record while Ottawa falls to 12-9-1-0. Kevin Bahl (1) and Kody Clark (10) scored goals for the 67’s who lost despite outshooting Hamilton 39-29.
