Steelheads Announce Changes to Hockey Operations Staff

Mississauga Steelheads

Mississauga, ON – Mississauga Steelheads’ President, Elliott Kerr announced today that James Richmond will assume the role of Head Coach for the 2016-2017 season, and James Boyd will focus entirely on the General Manager’s role.

“We are extremely happy that James Boyd will be returning as our General Manager, and are pleased to announce James Richmond as our new Head Coach,” said Steelheads’ President, Elliott Kerr. “As we continue to make strides to improve our hockey club, this restructuring allows for a stronger focus on skill development for our players, while maximizing our scouting and player recruitment programs.”

Richmond, who joined the Steelheads prior to the start of the 2015-2016 season, becomes the second Head Coach in franchise history. The Mississauga, Ontario native has vast experience coaching at all levels. Before joining the Steelheads, Richmond was the Head Coach and General Manager for the Aurora Tigers of Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), and was also a member of the player development staff for the Los Angeles Kings. Prior to Aurora, he also spent five seasons (2005-2010) as the Head Coach of the Georgetown Raiders. During his tenure with Aurora, Richmond improved his club’s record each season and was named the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 OJHL Coach-of-the-Year.

“I am very thankful for the opportunity James and Elliott have given me and I’m excited to build on the momentum the team showed this past season,” said Richmond. “We have some terrific returning players, and with some of the young prospects from our drafts the past few years the future looks great. I look forward to the challenge ahead and my family and I are honoured that I am the new Head Coach of the Mississauga Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League.”

James Boyd is eager to focus on player development and recruitment, adding “the Steelheads have made great improvements in the areas of player safety, education and scouting. I look forward to focusing my abilities on player acquisition, prospect development and the continuous improvement of our player environment. James Richmond is a proven head coach who will be able to focus all of his energy into our on-ice product. This is a positive next step in the evolution of our franchise. I look forward to working with our existing staff as we prepare for the 2016-2017 season.”
