Mississauga, ON – The Mississauga Steelheads are proud to announce that Michael McLeod will be the fifth captain in Steelheads history, joining the likes of Josh Burnside, Stuart Percy, Bryson Cianfrone and Brett Foy. McLeod, the Steelheads’ fifth overall pick at the 2014 OHL Priority Selection, becomes the first ever Mississauga born player to wear the “C” for the Steelheads.
Steelheads owner, Elliott Kerr explains, “Mikey has been a leader for our Steelheads organization since day one, and I am thrilled that a player who grew up and began his hockey in the Mississauga Hockey League with the Lorne Park Hockey Association will be our leader going forward both on and off the ice.”
After an impressive season with 61 points (21 goals, 40 assists) in 57 games, McLeod will be making the transition from assistant captain, to captain for the 2016-17 season. “Michael McLeod plays a fast, skilled, team first style of game. Michael will excel in his new leadership role with our team and serve as an excellent role model for our young fans,” said Steelheads general manager, James Boyd.
New captain Michael McLeod remarks, “I’m honoured and excited to assume this leadership role, and lead our team moving forward, as we look to challenge for the OHL Championship and the Memorial Cup.”
Prior to joining the Steelheads, McLeod played for the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget AAA. He finished third in GTHL scoring with 21 goals and 36 assists in 33 games, adding 7 points in 5 playoff games. He also went on to earn the Most Valuable Player honour for the 2014 OHL Cup as a member of the 2014 Champion Toronto Marlboros. McLeod’s resume also boasts honours such as representing Team Canada at the U17 and U18 World Championships. His talents and accomplishments to date have not gone unnoticed as he is projected to be selected in the first round of the upcoming 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
