Storm’s Rychel is OHL Player of the Week

Monday April 28, 2014

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Kerby Rychel of the Guelph Storm is the OHL Player of the Week for the playoff week ending April 27 after scoring three goals and three assists for six points in three games with a plus-minus rating of plus-3.

Rychel helped the Storm capture the Wayne Gretzky Trophy as Western Conference Champions with a five-game series win over the Erie Otters with multi-point performances in each of the final four games of the series.  Last week Rychel tallied a goal and an assist in Monday’s 7-1 victory in Game 3, then picked up another goal and assist on Tuesday night in Game 4 despite the 5-2 loss.  On Friday night in the series finale with the Storm leading the series 3-1, Rychel opened the scoring on the power play at 8:42 of the first period with his eighth goal of the playoffs.  That goal held as the game-winner and Rychel added a third period assist in the Storm’s 5-0 victory sending them to the Rogers OHL Championship Series where they will face the North Bay Battalion for the Robertson Cup.

Rychel, a 19-year-old from Tecumseh, ON, is playing in his fourth OHL season and first with the Storm after joining the club from the Windsor Spitfires midway through the 2013-14 campaign.  Selected by the Blue Jackets in the first round, 19th overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft, Rychel signed an entry-level contract with Columbus earlier this season.  He is currently tied for first in OHL playoff scoring with teammate Zack Mitchell with 23 points in 15 games after finishing 11th overall in regular season scoring with 90 points in 58 games tallying 34 goals and 56 assists.

Considered again for the award this week were both of the past two winners including Barclay Goodrow of the North Bay Battalion and the Storm’s Robby Fabbri.  Goodrow, a San Jose Sharks prospect had two goals and two assists for four points in two games of the Rogers Eastern Conference Championship Series against the Oshawa Generals.  Fabbri, a 2014 NHL Draft prospect had six points in three games for the Storm with three goals and three assists.  In goal, the Storm’s Justin Nichols went 2-1 with a shutout victory in the series finale posting a goals-against-average of 1.82 and save percentage of .947.
