Wednesday Highlights: Attack make it eight straight
OWEN SOUND 6 – SAULT STE. MARIE 1
The Owen Sound Attack stopped the OHL’s best road team cold in its tracks on Wednesday as overage winger Matt Schmalz (8, 9) had two goals and an assist in a 6-1 win over the visiting Soo Greyhounds. Reigning Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week Michael McNiven made 33 saves in goal while Maksim Sushko (10), Nick Suzuki (22), Jonah Gadjovich (18) and Sean Durzi (1) found the back of the net. Forwards Justin Brack and Zachary Roberts each had two assists as the Attack won their eighth straight contest, improving to 24-13-1-0. Sault Ste. Marie’s five game winning streak came to a halt as Boris Katchouk (17) spoiled McNiven’s shutout bid with 32 seconds left in the third period.
FLINT 5 – SARNIA 4
Jalen Smereck (5) and Nicholas Caamano (16) scored third period goals 1:06 apart as the Flint Firebirds came back for a 5-4 victory in Sarnia. The win pulls Flint to within one point of Sarnia in the West Division as overage defenceman Alex Peters (3) earned second star honours with a goal and two assists. Jake Durham (2) and Everett Clark (10) also had goals for Flint as the Firebirds improve to 4-0 against the Sting this season. Troy Lajeunesse (10, 11) scored twice for Sarnia while Kevin Spinozzi (7) and Sean Josling (4) also tallied. The Sting have now lost five straight.
ERIE 7 – NIAGARA 2
Newcomer Warren Foegele (12) had a goal and two assists in his Otters debut as Erie defeated visiting Niagara 7-2. The Otters snapped a three-game skid as Gera Poddubnyi (6), Patrick Fellows (7) and Jordan Sambrook (7) all had a goal and an assist. Darren Raddysh (9), Alex DeBrincat (32) and Kyle Pettit (15) also scored goals as Erie outshot Niagara 38-27. 2017 NHL Draft prospects Ben Jones (7) and Hayden Davis (3) had goals in Niagara’s third straight loss.
MISSISSAUGA 3 – HAMILTON 1
2017 NHL Draft prospect Owen Tippett (30, 31) scored twice and added an assist to lead the Mississauga Steelheads to a 3-1 road win in Hamilton. The Steelheads have now won three straight and climb into a first place tie with Sudbury atop the Central Division. New Jersey Devils prospect Nathan Bastian (10) also scored for Mississauga while goaltender Jacob Ingham made 24 saves. Michael Cramarossa (11) scored Hamilton’s lone goal while Dawson Carty made 31 saves in defeat. The Bulldogs see their three game winning streak come to an end.
