Wednesday Highlights: Rangers rally late
KITCHENER 5 – OWEN SOUND 4
Adam Mascherin (13, 14), Rickard Hugg (2) and Kole Sherwood (10) scored third period goals as the Kitchener Rangers rallied from a 4-2 deficit to defeat the Owen Sound Attack 5-4 on the road. Joseph Garreffa had four assists on the night while Mascherin had two goals and an assist as the Rangers expanded their lead to six points ahead of the Attack atop the Midwest Division. Owen Sound outshot Kitchener 32-25, outshooting their opponent for the 23rd time in 25 games this season. Nick Suzuki (17), Maksim Sushko (12), Sean Durzi (12) and Chase Campbell (2) had goals for the Bears while Aidan Dudas had a pair of assists. The Attack suffer their third straight loss, falling to 13-10-0-2 on the season.
KINGSTON 4 – OTTAWA 1
Carolina Hurricanes prospect Jeremy Helvig stopped 35 of the 36 shots he faced, a Wednesday morning performance highlighted by some high quality saves as the Kingston Frontenacs defeated the visiting Ottawa 67’s 4-1. The Fronts pull into a first place tie with Hamilton atop the Eastern Conference, improving to 14-7-2-3 as Nathan Dunkley (9), Matt Hotchkiss (5), Sergey Popov (5) and Ted Nichol (3) all had goals while Dallas Stars prospect Jason Robertson collected three assists. The 67’s outshot the Frontenacs 36-31, recording 18 shots in the third period as Graeme Clarke (8) spoiled Helvig’s shutout bid 4:50 into the final frame. Ottawa suffers a fourth straight loss, falling to 13-12-1-1 on the campaign. The 67’s wrap up five straight on the road and return home on Saturday for four of their next five contests.
