OHL at the WJC: A Tradition of Excellence

In the 21 years since Canada developed the "Program of Excellence" to develop the national junior team for competition in the annual World Junior Championships, 133 Ontario Hockey League players have been named to the nation's elite to represent their country.

Of those players, 64 won the gold medal, and six of them, Ed Jovanovski, Eric Lindros, Michael Peca, Chris Pronger, Brendan Shanahan and Steve Yzerman, won the gold medal with Team Canada at the 2002 Winter Olympics last February in Salt Lake City.

25 OHL'ers have played for Team Canada twice and two of them, Eric Lindros and Jason Spezza, were selected to play in three World Junior Championships.

The OHL's tradition with the national junior team has produced some spectacular results. Eight OHL players have earned Directorate Awards in the tournament, including Mike Moffat of the Kingston Canadians, who backstopped Canada to their first World Junior gold in 1982.

Moffat posted a 3-0-1 record while allowing just seven goals in four games. His heroic performance in the final game of the tournament gave Canada a 3-3 tie with Czechoslovakia, and the gold medal, despite being outshot 41-19. He made 35 saves in the opening win against Finland, and shutout the Russians, who had won the gold medal at each of the first seven tournaments.

OHL grads own several Canadian Junior Team records, including most career points (31 - Eric Lindros 1990,91,92), most career goals (12 - Lindros), most career assists (19 - Lindros), most points in one tournament (18 - Dale McCourt 1977), most goals in one tournament (11 - John Anderson 1977), most assists in one tournament (12 - Jason Allison 1995), most points in one game (tie) (7 - Dave Andreychuk 1983), most goals in one period (3 - Adam Graves 1988 and Jim Sandlak 1985), most goaltender wins in one tournament (tie) (6 - Manny Legace 1993) and fastest three goals (5:46 Adam Graves 1988).

Other outstanding moments at the World Juniors for OHL players include: Adam Creighton (Ottawa 67's) and Brian Bradley (London Knights) leading Canada to the gold medal and tying for the team scoring lead with 12 points in 1985; Oshawa Generals teammates Lindros and Mike Craig combining for 12 goals in Canada's gold medal win in 1991; Legace allowing just 10 goals and winning all six of his starts to backstop Canada to the gold medal in 1993; Jamie Storr of the Owen Sound Platers going undefeated with a 2.50 goals against average in four starts in a 1994 gold medal performance; Allison tying the team lead with 15 points in 1995; Boyd Devereaux of the Kitchener Rangers scoring four goals, including the game-winner against the U.S.A. in the 1997 tournament finals.

Other players have played smaller roles that helped lead Canada to gold, including a 17-year-old Joe Thornton, the youngest player on the 1997 team, who chipped in with two goals and four points, helping Canada to their fifth consecutive gold medal.

Thornton recently reflected on winning the gold medal in Switzerland. "It's a great tournament," he said. "I had a lot of fun. I still have so many great memories of the tournament. It was a good experience."
