OHL Cup Results - Day 1

The 2007 Ontario Hockey League Showcase Tournament kicked off today at te Hershey Centre, in Mississauga with some hard fought games between some of the top Minor Midget teams in Ontario facing off.

Mississauga Rebels 2, Cambridge Hawks 1 (OT)

The first game of the tournament went into overtime with Mississauga emerging victorious. Daniel Purcell opened the scoring for the Rebels at 9:03 of the first period on assists from Taylor Carnevale and Peter Hermenegildo. Ryan Skanes countered for Cambridge in the second period and the game remained tied through regulation. Carnevale put the game away for Mississauga scoring at 3:55 of the overtime period.

Toronto Marlboros 3, Whitby Wildcats 1

The first game in the main bowl of the Hershey Centre was a spirited contest with the GTHL finalist Marlboros emerging as the victor. The two teams remained scoreless until Derek Foote opened the scoring on the power play for Whitby on a feed from Daniel Pachis at 4:06 of the second period. The Marlies responded three unanswered goals by Shane Kinsella, Massimo Lamacchia and Richard Buehler.


Game Summary



Mississauga IceDogs 3, Barrie Colts 1

Casey Cizikas scored unassisted 0:22 seconds into the second period to get things kicked off for the IceDogs. At 11:33 of the second Andrew Agozzino added to the lead on the power play on an assist by David Corrente. Chris Beauchamp countered for Barrie on the Colts power play, on assists from Jordan Duckworth and Mike Mullay. Michael Fine added an insurance marker for Mississauga at 5:31 of the third period from Michael Santini.


Game Summary



Waterloo Wolves 4, Central Ontario Wolves 3

Waterloo jumped out to a 2-0 lead 4:25 into the game on goals by Scott Nagy and Jonathan Jutzi. Central Ontario countered with a power play goal off of the stick of Matthew Davis late in the first. Michael Halmo extended the Wateroo lead to 3-1 early in the second period. Matthew Duchene scored at 10:14 of the second period to bring Central to within one. Halmo scored his second goal of the game mid way through the third period to restore the two-goal advantage for Waterloo. Davis scored once again for Central Ontario with 0:33 seconds remaining in the game but they could not notch the equalizer. Chad Lowry had two assists and Colin Behenna had three helpers in the game for Waterloo.


Game Summary



Niagara Falls Thunder 6, Toronto Young Nats 3

After falling behind 3-2 early in the second period Niagara Falls responded with four unanswered goals to pick up the 6-3 victory. Justin Shugg (pictured) led the attack for Niagara Falls recording a hat trick and adding two assists.
Taylor Beck had a goal and an assist in the contest while Alex Friesen picked up two assists for the Thunder. Anthony Luis and Jake Noel also had single goals for Niagara Falls. Tyler Seguin had a goal and an assist to lead the Toronto attack while Justin Baker had two assists. Brandon Pirri and Reilly Smith had the other goals for Toronto.


Game Summary



Windsor Spitfires 2, Thunder Bay Kings 1

Ryan Speers opened the scoring early in the game on assists from Tyler Quigley and Zack Kassian. Luke Judson replied for Thunder Bay at 10:21 of the first period from Michael McDonald and Andrew Wiebe. Quigley scored the game winning goal for Windsor late in the second period with helpers going to Kassian and Speers as all three players picked up their second point of the game. Kyle Andrian picked up the win in net and was named the game MVP for the Spitfires


Game Summary



Burlington Eagles 3, Gloucester Rangers 2

Gloucester opened the scoring at 4:46 of the first period on a shorthanded goal by Craig Moore from Eric Laplante. Jordan Szwarz responded for Burlington scoring two back-to-back goals. Greg Gibson potted the game winning goal while shorthanded at 11:48 of the third period. Brett Flemming had two assists for the victors while Brett Nooyen tallied a single marker for Gloucester. Bryce O'Hagan picked up the win between the pipes and was named the Player of the Game for Burlington. Steven Dignard was named the Player of the Game for Gloucester.


Game Summary



Toronto Jr. Canadians 2, Kingston Predators 1

The Jr. Canadians fell behind late in the first period as Kingston forward Cory Bureau scored a goal on a feed from Taylor Hall and Kyle Gaskin. Toronto was able to battle back however and earn a hoard fought 2-1 victory. Rob McEwan tied the game at 4:57 of the second period on assists from Kyle Merman and Marko Brelih. Late in the third period Justin Pereira was able to beat the Kingston goaltender on a feed from McEwan.
