OHL Cup Results for Championship Sunday

Toronto Marlboros 4, Whitby Wildcats 1

The final day of the 2007 Ontario Hockey League Showcase Tournament began with a spirited semi-final between the Toronto Marlboros taking on the OMHA champion, Whitby Wildcats. Daniel Erlich took advantage of an odd man rush on the power play to give the Marlies a 1-0 lead half way through the first period. Ethan Werek and Jordan Mustard assisted on the play. Late in the period, Erlich took advantage of another Wildcats penalty scoring his second goal of the contest from Marc Anthony Zanetti and Massimo Lamacchia. Whitby goalie, Brandon Foote kept the game close stopping multiple breakaways and quality scoring opportunities in the second period. However, the Marlies were able to find the back of the net once again before the end of the period as Ethan Werek scored from Erlich and Daniel Hnatko. Whitby utilized a two-man advantage by pulling their goalie to go three men up. At 11:53 of the third period the gamble paid off as Anton Zupanic scored with assists going to Brett Mackie and Daniel Pachis. However, that was as close as Whitby would get. They once again pulled their goalie late in the game while on the power play and Ethan Werek hit Massimo Lamacchia with a pass at centre ice as Lamacchia was coming out of the penalty box. Lamacchia broke in uncontested and slid the puck into the empty Wildcats net, to clinch Toronto's birth in the final later this afternoon. Michael Zador picked up the victory between the pipes for the Marlboros.
