In Barrie, Devante Smith-Pelly scored 18:05 into the third overtime to cap the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors' 4-3 win over the Colts in one of four games in the OHL playoffs on Saturday.
The win gave the Majors a 4-1 win in their first round Eastern Conference playoff series.
Stefan Della Rovere, Alex Hutchings and Michael Sgarbossa all scored to give the Colts a three-goal lead in the first period. Cameron Gaunce scored two goals and set up Kaspars Daugavins for another in the second period to tie the game.
After a scoreless third period and two scoreless overtime periods, Smith-Pelly finally ended the game - and the series - after 58:05 of overtime. This was the second longest overtime game in OHL history, only 5:46 off the record set on March 20, 1990, in a game that saw Belleville defeat Kingston 4-3 in the fourth overtime period in a game lasting 123:51.
Michael Pelech had two assists and JP Anderson stopped 68 shots in the win. Peter DiSalvo made 84 saves in the loss.
Plymouth Whalers 8, Sarnia Sting 1
In Plymouth, Chris Terry scored three goals to power the Whalers to an 8-1 win over the Sarnia Sting that ended their Western Conference playoff series in five games. The Whalers will face the Windsor Spitfires in the second round.
Ryan Hayes, Kaine Geldart, AJ Jenks, Joe Gaynor and Beau Schmitz also scored and Leo Jenner had three assists for the Whalers. Matt Hackett made 27 saves for the win.
Mark Katic replied for the Sting while Dan Spence and Shayne Campbell split the goaltending duties.
London Knights 6, Erie Otters 2
In London, John Tavares and Phil Varone each scored two goals to lead the Knights to a 6-2 win over the Erie Otters. The Knights won the series in five games and will face the Saginaw Spirit in the second round.
Tavares and Varone staked the Knights to a two-goal lead in the first period before Sean Jones and Mike Cazzola replied for the Otters early in the second period. Varone and Justin Taylor put the Knights ahead with powerplay goals in the second period and Tavares and Leigh Salters counted in the third. John Carlson had three assists in the win.
Trevor Cann made 26 saves for the Knights while Jaroslav Janus allowed six goals on 52 shots for the Otters.
Niagara IceDogs 4, Ottawa 67's 3
In St. Catharines, Marco Insam scored two goals, including the game-winner late in the third period to help the Niagara IceDogs to a 4-3 win over the Ottawa 67's. Niagara leads the series 3-2 with Game 6 in Ottawa on Monday.
Alex Freisen and Mathew Sisca also scored and Andrew Agozzino picked up two assists for the IceDogs while Jeremy Smith made 37 saves.
Ryan Martindale opened the scoring early in the first period and Anthony Nigro scored a pair of goals to tie the game in the third. Adam Courchaine made 26 saves in the loss.
