OHL Playoff Roundup: Thursday

In Peterborough, Brad Albert scored the winning goal early in the third period to help the Brampton Battalion to a 3-2 win over the Petes in one of six games in the OHL playoffs on Thursday.

The win gives Brampton a sweep of their first round series.

 

Matt Duchene and Andrew Merrett scored in the first period for Brampton with defenceman Ken Peroff picking up assists on both goals.

 

Thomas McCollum stopped 32 of 34 shots for Brampton in the win.

 

Tony Romano returned after missing the past two games due to injury and scored both of Peterborough’s goals in the third period. Jason Missiaen made 30 saves in the loss.

Saginaw Spirit 4, Guelph Storm 1

 

In Guelph, Chris Chappell scored the go-ahead goal in the second period to help the Saginaw Spirit to a 4-1 win over the Storm and complete a sweep of their first round playoff series.

 

Peter Holland opened the scoring for Guelph in the first period before Saginaw took the lead on goals by Richard Jarusek and Chappell a little more than two minutes apart in the second. Nick Crawford and T.J. Brodie scored in the final minutes of the game.

 

Edward Pasquale made 20 saves in the win while Jake Fischer allowed three goals on 47 shots for Guelph.

London Knights 4, Erie Otters 2

 

In Erie, Scott Aarssen scored the winning goal in the final seconds of the second period to help the London Knights double the Otters 4-2. London leads the series 3-1 and host Game 5 on Saturday.

 

Michael Del Zotto, Phil Varone and Justin Taylor also scored and John Carlson added two assists for the Knights. Trevor Cann got the win after making 23 saves.

 

Greg McKegg and Tyler Hostetter replied for Erie and Jaroslav Janus allowed three goals on 32 shots.

Barrie Colts 3, Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors 2 (OT)

 

In Barrie, Darren Archibald scored 5:47 into overtime to cap the Colts’ 3-2 come from behind win over the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors. Mississauga leads the series 3-1 with Game 5 on Saturday in Barrie.

 

Jared Gomes and Kaspars Daugavins both scored in the first 1:38 of the game to stake the Majors to an early lead but Michael Sgarbossa replied midway through the first period and then tied the game late in the second.

 

Peter Di Salvo made 36 saves in the win while JP Anderson suffered his first loss of the playoffs after giving up three goals on 42 shots.

Ottawa 67’s 6, Niagara IceDogs 4

 

In St. Catharines, Logan Couture scored the winning goal with less than two minutes to go in the third period to help the Ottawa 67’s to a 6-4 win over the Niagara IceDogs.

 

The series is tied with Game 5 scheduled for Saturday in St. Catharines.

 

Couture opened the scoring for Ottawa just 16 seconds into the game and Thomas Kiriakou scored two goals, including an empty-netter to seal the win. Michael Blunden and Cody Lindsay also scored for Ottawa and Adam Courchaine turned aside 37 shots in the win.

 

Andrew Agozzino scored twice for the IceDogs, including a goal midway through the third period that gave the IceDogs a brief lead. Mathew Sisca and Drew Schiestel also scored for the IceDogs and Marco Insam had two assists. Jeremy Smith allowed five goals on 46 shots.

 

Game Summary

 

Plymouth Whalers 5, Sarnia Sting 0

 

In Sarnia, Matt Caria scored two goals and added an assist and Matt Hackett stopped all 27 shots he faced to give the Plymouth Whalers a 5-0 win over the Sting.

 

Tyler Seguin scored a goal and added two assists and Tyler J. Brown and Ryan Hayes also scored in the win, Plymouth’s third straight in the series to give them a 3-1 lead. The Whalers host Game 5 on Saturday.

 

Dan Spence allowed five goals on 32 shots for Sarnia, who were scoreless on nine powerplay opportunities in the game.
