Team Ontario got into the win column at the World Under-17 Challenge in Timmins, ON with a decisive 3-0 victory over Quebec on Wednesday.
The win evened Ontario's record at 1-1 after a 5-3 loss to Finland on Tuesday.
"The boys played an amazingly strong two-way game tonight," said Ontario head coach Jake Grimes of the Belleville Bulls. "I don't think we gave up a single odd man rush in the game. Our forwards back-checked hard and our D were in position all night."
After going through the first half of the game scoreless, Carter Sandlak of the Guelph Storm put Ontario on the board with his first goal of the tournament from David Broll of the Erie Otters and Brett Ritchie of the Sarnia Sting.
Matthew Puempel of the Peterborough Petes and Boone Jenner of the Oshawa Generals scored less than a minute apart early in the third period to seal the win. Ryan Murphy of the Kitchener Rangers assisted on Puempel's goal, a powerplay marker, while Puempel and Stuart Percy of the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors picked up assists on Jenner's goal.
"It was nice to see us get some scoring," Grimes said. "We had a number of chances (against Finland) and hit posts and put pucks through the crease. I think the guys were starting to get discouraged. We broke through late and I think the guys just feel a lot lighter now."
Tyson Teichmann of the Belleville Bulls turned aside all 14 shots he faced in the win. Teichmann leads all goalies in the tournament with a 0.60 goals against average after allowing one goal in two periods of work against Finland on Tuesday.
"I'm excited about Tyson," Grimes said. "He was good when he came in against Finland and he was strong again tonight. It feels good to have him in there and doing well."
Ontario was one-for six on the powerplay and killed off all seven of Quebec's extra man chances.
Ontario (1-1) is off on Thursday before returning to action on Friday against Sweden, who opened the tournament with a 6-4 win over Finland on Wednesday.
They will have a light skate on Thursday and then plan to watch the Canada-U.S.A. game of the World Junior Championships in Saskatoon while the coaches scout the Sweden-West game - Ontario's next two opponents.
Ontario wraps up the round robin segment of the tournament on Saturday against Team West.
