Team GTHL Blue, ALLIANCE, OMHA White and OMHA Black were all winners on Day 3 of the 2018 OHL Gold Cup at the Activa Sportsplex in Kitchener, Ont. on Saturday.
A total of 130 players chosen in April’s OHL Priority Selection are representing their respective minor hockey associations in the annual showcase event.
Here’s a look at Saturday’s action.
ELEVEN GOAL OUTBURST PUSHES GTHL BLUE TO 3-0
GTHL BLUE 11 (3-0-0-0) – HNO 1 (1-2-0-0)
Team GTHL Blue opened Day 3 action bright and early with 11 goals on 40 shots as Sebastian Bulovs (SAG) led the way with three goals and an assist in an 11-1 victory over Team HNO.
Will Cuylle (PBO) scored twice while Jake Uberti (NIAG) had a goal and four helpers. Reid Valade (KIT) and defencemen Michael Bianconi (FLNT), Owen Power (FLNT) and Lleyton Moore (NIAG) all had a goal and an assist. Dylan Robinson (OSH) had three assists while Davis Young (HAM) also found the back of the net.
Goaltenders Marco Costantini (HAM) and Tristan Lennox (SAG) combined to stop 26 of 27 shots as HNO’s Colby Ambrosio (OTT) scored the lone goal in the lopsided defeat.
GTHL Blue went 2-for-2 on the power play while holding HNO to an 0-for-6 mark.
ONUSKA SOLID AS ALLIANCE OUTLASTS NOHA FOR FIRST WIN
ALLIANCE 4 (1-2-0-0) – NOHA 1 (1-2-0-0)
Mathias Onuska (KGN) stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced as Team ALLIANCE scored their first win of the 2018 OHL Gold Cup, defeating Team NOHA 4-1.
Nathan Small (OS), George Diaco (HAM), Ryan Ganger (OSH) and Rylan Bowers (MISS) all lit the lamp while Joseph Serpa (KIT) had two assists.
David Campbell (NB) scored NOHA’s lone marker while Reece Proulx (NB) made 27 saves in the loss.
COMPLETE EFFORT BOOSTS OMHA WHITE OVER HEO
OMHA WHITE 6 (2-1-0-0) – HEO 2 (0-3-0-0)
Six different goal-scorers powered Team OMHA White to victory on Saturday afternoon, handing HEO its third straight loss in a 6-2 decision.
Ethan Sims (NIAG) and Luke Evangelista (LDN) opened the scoring with first period tallies before Michael Tiveron (SBY), Cameron Snow (NIAG), Jakson Kirk (PBO) and Logan Morrison (HAM) also found the scoresheet.
Ben Roger (LDN), Cameron Tolnai (OTT) and Kalvyn Watson (SSM) each had a pair of assists.
Rocco Testa-Basi (BAR) and Josh Barnes (OS) provided HEO markers in the loss as they were outshot 36-19.
BUTLER THE HERO AS OMHA BLACK WINS IN OT
OMHA BLACK 4 (2-0-1-0) – GTHL RED 3 (2-0-1-0)
Cameron Butler (PBO) completed the comeback 2:07 into overtime as Team OMHA Black overcame a 3-1 deficit to defeat Team GTHL Red 4-3.
Butler’s second of the game came on assists from Alec Belanger (OTT) and Quinton Byfield (SBY) as OMHA Black handed GTHL Red its first loss.
Byfield and Brody Waters (OS) added OMHA goals while goaltender Will Cranley (OTT) made 28 saves to earn the win.
Michael Renwick (HAM), Eric Russell (BAR) and Cole Perfetti (SAG) scored for GTHL Red as they came up just short. Joe Vrbetic (NB) made 29 saves in goal.
