228 OHL graduates compete in 2019-20 NHL campaign

The Stanley Cup has been awarded to the Tampa Bay Lightning, bringing an end to perhaps the most interesting season of hockey many of us will experience in our lifetimes.

Interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the hockey season spanned into the month of September. Though the Canadian Hockey League’s three regional outposts, the OHL, WHL and QMJHL weren’t able to crown a champion, the National Hockey League established ‘bubbles’ in Toronto and Edmonton, with the Lightning and their 10 OHL graduates emerging victorious.

A total of 228 OHL alumni appeared over the course of the 2019-20 NHL regular season and playoffs, accounting for approximately 21% of all players to set foot on the ice.

The Chicago Blackhawks led all NHL clubs, boasting 12 OHL graduates on their final roster while the Anaheim Ducks, Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs each trailed with 11. The Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes, Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils, Ottawa Senators and Vancouver Canucks each featured 10.

The London Knights led all OHL clubs with 34 graduates competing in the NHL this past season. The Soo Greyhounds featured the second-most with 22 while the Barrie Colts and Kitchener Rangers each produced 15.

A total of three players on the list in London Knights forward Liam Foudy, Peterborough Petes forward Nick Robertson and Mississauga Steelheads defenceman Thomas Harley managed to see NHL action while also putting in a full season of OHL play.

A pair of veterans in Philadelphia Flyers forward Chris Stewart (Kingston Frontenacs) and Detroit Red Wings defenceman Trevor Daley (Soo Greyhounds) announced their retirement at the conclusion of the season.
