Attack graduate Bobby Ryan wins NHL’s Bill Masterton Trophy

The National Hockey League announced Monday that Bobby Ryan of the Ottawa Senators is the 2019-20 recipient of the Bill Masterton Trophy awarded to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Ryan took an extended leave of absence from the Senators in November to enter the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program, citing issues with alcohol abuse. He returned to the lineup against the Nashville Predators on Feb. 25, and two days later scored a hat-trick in his first home game back, a 5-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks.

Ryan played in Ottawa’s final eight games before the season was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus, finishing the season with five goals, three assists and eight points over 24 contests.

The local chapters of the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PWHA) submitted nominations for the Masterton Trophy with the top-three vote-getters emerging as finalists. Ryan edged out Philadelphia’s Oskar Lindblom and Dallas’ Stephen Johns to claim the honours.

A 33-year-old from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Ryan is the all-time leading scorer in Owen Sound Attack franchise history as he racked up 325 points (133-192–325) over 249 regular season games between 2003-07.

An OHL First Team All-Star in 2005, Ryan went on to be the second overall pick of the 2005 NHL Draft by the Anaheim Ducks. He’s played in 833 career NHL regular season games over 12 seasons between Anaheim and Ottawa.

Ryan is the latest OHL graduate to win the award, joining other recent recipients in Robin Lehner (NY Islanders, 2019) and Craig Anderson (Ottawa, 2017).
