NORTH BAY, Ont. — Defenceman James Mayotte has signed a standard player’s agreement, including an education package, with the North Bay Battalion, the Ontario Hockey League club announced Wednesday.
Mayotte, a left-shot rearguard who has played the last two years at Shattuck-St. Mary’s, a prep school in Faribault, Minn., was a fifth-round pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. He turned 17 on March 4.
The six-foot-two, 185-pound resident of Mallorytown, Ont., played 55 games with the Sabres midgets last season, scoring eight goals and earning 12 assists for 20 points. He also played 19 games for the school’s under-18 entry in the North American Prep Hockey League, scoring one goal and adding four assists for five points.
Mayotte is to report to a Battalion training camp in August that figures to have four holdover defencemen, in overager Nick King, Braden Henderson, Simon Rose and Pacey Schlueting, North Bay’s first-round pick in 2018.
The Battalion selected Czech defenceman Martin Hugo Has in the first round of the Canadian Hockey League Import Draft in June. A right shot who stands six-foot-four and weighs 192 pounds, he was the 22nd pick in the two-round process.
Theo Calvas was an overager last season, and imports David Maier and Zack Malik will not return. Maier was selected by the Peterborough Petes in the CHL Import Draft in June. Travis Mailhot, who turned 19 in January, was restricted by injury to three games last season and has retired.
The Battalion signed three skaters to standard player’s agreements at its May orientation camp, in centre Liam Arnsby, defenceman Paul Christopoulos and right winger Alex Christopoulos. Arnsby and the Christopoulos twins were North Bay’s first three picks in the OHL Priority Selection on April 6, all from the Don Mills Flyers minor midgets.
