Majors’ Commemorative Jerseys Available for Auction Until 8pm Monday May 30

Mississauga, ON –The Canadian Hockey League in association with the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors today announced that the specially designed commemorative jerseys worn by the Majors in the opening game of the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup against the Saint John Sea Dogs are available for online auction at until 7:00 pm on Monday May 30, 2011.

The opening game jerseys were designed by the Canadian Hockey League in conjunction with the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors in honour of the memory of Canadian soldier Marc Diab, a Mississauga native.  Diab fought and died in Afghanistan for his country, and the soldier depicted on the jersey comes from an image of Marc.  The Maple Leaf is from the Toronto Scottish Regiment logo which was an armed forces unit based out of Mississauga that fought in World War 1.  Additionally, the four blue stripes on the sleeves and bottoms of the jersey represent the four Memorial Cups won by the St. Michael’s Majors in their history.

Proceeds from the auction will go towards the local Poppy Trust Fund.  Poppy funds are spent to support veterans and their families, buy hospital equipment, support cadet groups, and provide student bursaries.  The MasterCard Memorial Cup Theme Jersey Program was created in 2008 and have cumulatively generated over $90,000 for the fund.

The Memorial Cup was donated in 1919 by the Ontario Hockey Association as a memorial to those young men and women who had been given their lives in the defence of Canada during World War I.  The 2011 edition of the tournament in Mississauga will mark the 93rd time this prestigious trophy will be presented.

The Poppy, when used as a symbol of Remembrance in Canada, is a registered trademark of Dominion Command of The Royal Canadian Legion and is used with the kind permission of Dominion Command.

The 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup is proudly supported by MasterCard, title sponsor of this event for 13 straight years.  Associate sponsors include Bank of Montreal, Subway, Insurance Brokers Association of Canada, and CCM.  All games will be broadcast live to a national audience on Rogers Sportsnet and RDS.
