Saginaw, MI – The Saginaw Spirit announce today that the team has come to terms on an OHL Educational Package agreement with 2015 import selection Markus Niemelainen.
The Spirit used the 18th overall pick in the 2015 CHL Import Draft to select Niemelainen of Finland and the 1998 birth year defenseman comes to the Spirit with considerable international playing experience. He represented his home country at the World Under 17 Challenge in Sarnia, Ontario and at the 2015 Under 18 World Championship in Switzerland, where Finland took home the Silver Medal. The Spirit’s Evan Cormier and Mitchell Stephens also medaled at the April event with Canada finishing as the Bronze Medal winning country.
Niemelainen, who is eligible for the 2016 NHL Draft in Buffalo, is a native of Kuopio, Finland and skated with HPK Hameenlinna this past season. Saginaw Spirit General Manager Dave Drinkill had this to say about the latest addition to the roster.
“We as an organization are very pleased and extremely excited that Markus has come to terms and will be joining the Saginaw Spirit this season. He will be a tremendous asset to our team on and off the ice. Our staff is looking forward to working with him and helping him develop as a player. Markus has unlimited potential and has the highest aspirations for his career, and it is our job to help him reach these goals.
