Meireles on his way back to Rangers

After a look with the Florida Panthers and an extended stay with the AHL’s Springfield Thunderbirds, overage forward Greg Meireles is returning to the Kitchener Rangers.

The 20-year-old from Ottawa will return to a familiar spot on the Rangers top line alongside fellow veteran and former 50-goal scorer Jonathan Yantsis.

“I’m excited,” Yantsis told The Record’s Josh Brown. “I know all the guys are too. He’s a great player and he’s going to do a lot for us.”

The team’s leading scorer with 97 points last season, Meireles was Florida’s sixth round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. He re-joins the Rangers after they dropped three straight decisions on a northern road swing with stops in North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury this past weekend. Kitchener pushed things beyond regulation in North Bay and Sudbury to return home with a pair of points.

Meireles was selected by the Rangers with the 12th overall pick of the 2015 OHL Priority Selection. The 5-foot-11, 182Ib centre as collected 174 points (68-106–174) over 196 career regular season games with Kitchener. He played a big part in powering the Rangers’ top-ranked power play last season.

Meireles, who was named co-captain of the Rangers alongside Dallas Stars prospect Riley Damiani, slots back into the lineup when Kitchener plays host to the Owen Sound Attack on Friday at The Aud.
