OHL alumni representing Canada at IIHF World Hockey Championship


Five OHL graduates along with former two-time OHL Coach of the Year Andre Tourigny are representing Canada at the 2023 IIHF World Hockey Championship in Tampere, Finland and Riga, Latvia, with Quarter-Final action getting underway this afternoon.

Former Kingston Frontenacs forward Lawson Crouse, Oshawa Generals alumnus Scott Laughton, along with Ottawa 67’s graduates Tyler ToffoliJack Quinn and Jacob Middleton look to take another step towards gold when they face Finland in today’s Quarter-Final clash.

Former back-to-back OHL Coach of the Year Andre Tourigny leads from behind the bench. Previously serving as head coach of Canada’s World Juniors entry in 2021, Tourigny spent four seasons with the Ottawa 67’s from 2017-2021, and now works as Head Coach of the Arizona Coyotes.

Doug Armstrong leads Canadian contingent as General Manager, joined by Associate General Manager Steve Yzerman, Assistant General Manager Shane Doan and Senior Vice-President of Hockey Operations Scott Salmond.

Canada played to a record of 5-2 in preliminary play, defeating Latvia 6-0, Slovenia 6-2, Slovakia 2-1 in a shootout and Kazakhstan 5-1 before falling to Switzerland by a score of 3-2 followed by a loss to Norway in a 3-2 shootout decision. Canada concluded the round robin by defeating Czechia 3-1 on Tuesday.

Other teams joining Canada and Finland in advancing to the Quarter-Finals include the United States, who defeated Czechia 3-0 on Thursday morning, Germany, who defeated Switzerland 3-1 as well as Sweden and Latvia.

TSN and RDS, the official broadcast partners of Hockey Canada, is  once again provide extensive coverage of the entire tournament, with TSN broadcasting all 64 tournament games and RDS broadcasting 24 games.

Since 1931, Canada has won the world championship 28 times. It has also collected 16 silver medals and seven bronze.
