OHL This Week: November 24 to 27, 2022

 

It’s a busy week in the Ontario Hockey League, with lots happening as we embark on a three-game Thursday night. Teddy Bear Tosses are coming your way! Read up on that and more in the latest edition of OHL This Week.

Four OHL clubs bid to host 2024 Memorial Cup presented by Kia:
Four Ontario Hockey League clubs have submitted intents to bid for the hosting rights of the 2024 Memorial Cup presented by Kia. The Kingston Frontenacs, Niagara IceDogs, Saginaw Spirit, and Soo Greyhounds will each submit their bids prior to the January 31 deadline, with the winning bid then announced in March 2023. Read More

67’s, Spitfires and Battalion make Week 8 edition of Kia CHL Top 10:
The Ottawa 67’s, Windsor Spitfires and North Bay Battalion are included in the Week 8 edition of the Kia CHL Top 10 Rankings. Watch

Storm’s Poitras named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week:
Boston Bruins prospect Matthew Poitras of the Guelph Storm is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week after recording two goals, six assists and eight points in a pair of Storm victories. Read More

Petes’ Simpson named OHL Goaltender of the Week:
Michael Simpson of the Peterborough Petes is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, posting a 2-0 record with a 1.50 goals-against average, .950 save percentage and one shutout. Read more

Frontenacs’ Zhigalov headlines OHL Saves of the Week:
The latest edition of OHL Saves of the Week features Kingston’s Ivan Zhigalov, Saginaw’s Andrew Oke, Kitchener’s Marcus Vandenberg, Hamilton’s Matteo Drobac and Barrie’s Ben West. Watch

Rangers’ Pinelli dazzles in OHL Plays of the Week:

First edition of OHL Cup U16 AAA Top 10 Rankings:
The OHL has released its first edition of the OHL Cup Top 10 Rankings, a list that will be released each Tuesday throughout the remainder of the season. The 2023 OHL Cup will feature 20 teams consisting of talent eligible for the 2023 OHL Priority Selection. Read More

Whitby Silver Stick Tournament brings back memories across the OHL:
One of the world’s largest minor hockey tournaments makes its return to the scene later this week as the Gloria Rints Memorial Silver Stick Tournament in Whitby, Ont. will host 30 of the top U16 AAA teams across the land as they compete for one of minor hockey’s greatest achievements. Read more

Akey and Musty upgraded to A rating by NHL Central Scouting:
Blueliner Beau Akey of the Barrie Colts and forward Quentin Musty of the Sudbury Wolves have been elevated to an A rating by NHL Central Scouting for the 2023 NHL Draft. Read More

Colts’ Williamson earns 500th OHL coaching victory:
Marty Williamson’s 500th career OHL coaching win came in comeback fashion on Saturday night in Barrie as the Colts defeated Sarnia in overtime. Williamson is in his 14th season behind an OHL bench, having served as a head coach in both Barrie and Niagara. Read more

Liam Spencer commits to Steelheads:
The Mississauga Steelheads have received a commitment from fourth round 2022 OHL Priority Selection choice Liam Spencer. Read more

 

COMMUNITY CORNER:

Bulldogs unveil warmup jersey honouring Indigenous community:
The Hamilton Bulldogs have unveiled warmup jerseys honouring the Indigenous community. Kory Parkin, an Indigenous artist himself, dove deep into the history of the Indigenous peoples of the Hamilton area to help in the design. At season’s end the Bulldogs will also be auctioning the jerseys off with the proceeds benefiting PALS, the Police Athletic League for Students through the Six Nations Police Service. Read more

Otters to host Thanksgiving game on Thursday:
The Erie Otters are set to host their annual Thanksgiving game on Thursday. During the game, the team will host a team-signed, team-made Tie Blanket “enter to win” raffle – all proceeds from the raffle will go to benefit Community Shelter Services. Read more

Petes to host Diabetes Awareness Night on Thursday:
The Peterborough Petes are set to host their Diabetes Awareness game on Thursday. The night is a personal initiative for Petes goalie Michael Simpson, who lives with Type-1 diabetes. The game is in support of Diabetes Canada and all fundraising efforts, including chuck-a-puck and a game-worn Simpson jersey auction, will go towards sending local children with diabetes to D-Camp. Battalion to host Special Olympics game on Thursday:
The North Bay Battalion are set to host their Special Olympics game on Thursday where two local special Olympians will be honored before the game in a ceremonial face-off. A second period “Bucket Pass” will also take place as fans will be able to make a donation to Special Olympics. Read more

Frontenacs to host Canadians and Raiders game on Friday:
The Kingston Frontenacs will be honouring their roots on Friday, as the team hosts their Canadians and Raiders Night. The Frontenacs will be wearing special 50th anniversary jerseys that draws inspiration from the team’s history. The jerseys will be available through auction with all proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society. Read more

Spitfires to host Witches and Wizards game on Friday:
The Windsor Spitfires will be hosting their Witches and Wizards game on Friday as fans are encouraged to show up wearing their best costumes! There will be plenty of magical family fun throughout the night.

Storm to host Books for Kids game on Friday:
The Guelph Storm are set to host their annual Books for Kids game on Friday. GuelphToday.com and the Storm are asking fans attending the game to bring happiness into the home of families in need in the community by donating new, unwrapped books that are suitable for children ages newborn to 18 years at all arena entrances. Read more

Teddy Bear Toss season across the League:
It’s officially Teddy Bear Toss season in the OHL! Fans can let bears fly on Saturday as Erie, Flint and Niagara host their annual Teddy Bear Toss games. All teddy bears will be collected and given to children in need during this holiday season. Visit team websites for more information.

Attack to host Toys for Tots game on Saturday:
The Owen Sound Attack are set to host their Toys for Tots game on Saturday. The attack will be selling pucks for the cause at the game, as well as accepting toy and cash donations for their Christmas Toy Drive. Fans can also donate at the Rocking Horse and the local fire hall.

Petes to host Family Feud game on Saturday:
The Peterborough Petes are set to host Family Feud night on Saturday. There will be a non-perishable food drive in support of Kawartha Food Share before the game, so make sure to bring your items! Both intermissions will feature Family Feud style activations.

Rangers to host 80’s Retro game on Sunday:
The Kitchener Rangers are set to host their 80’s retro game on Sunday. The Rangers encourage fans to wear their best 80’s look as they honour the team’s history from the decade. The game will include activations, music, and more from the decade. Two Rangers Alumni from the decade will participate in a ceremonial puck drop. Read more

 

ALUMNI NOTES:

Storm raise Ryan Callahan’s #24 to the rafters:
The Guelph Storm honoured Ryan Callahan over the weekend, raising his #24 to the rafters of the Sleeman Centre. A former 15th round OHL Priority Selection choice, Callahan went on to become an OHL champion and Overage Player of the Year with the franchise, scoring a record 130 goals over four seasons (2002-06). Hollowell makes NHL debut:
Developing a reputation in the OHL for playing a game much bigger than his 5-foot-9, 170Ib. frame, former Soo Greyhounds defender Mac Hollowell has hustled his way into the NHL. The 24-year-old from Niagara Falls, Ont. saw his first NHL action on Wednesday, helping the Toronto Maple Leafs snap New Jersey’s 13-game winning streak. He played 259 regular season games over parts of five seasons in the OHL, recording 42 goals, 141 assists and 183 points. Read more

Olausson makes NHL debut:
Former Oshawa Generals and Barrie Colts forward Oskar Olausson saw his first NHL action on Wednesday night in Denver, suiting up in a 4-3 Colorado Avalanche loss to the Vancouver Canucks.Olausson split last season between Barrie and Oshawa, recording 49 points (26-23–49) in 55 games between the two clubs. Originally Barrie’s second round (118th overall) pick in the 2021 CHL Import Draft, Olausson came to the OHL after being selected in the first round (28th overall) of the 2021 NHL Draft by Colorado. Read more

Marner, Robertson riding lengthy point streaks:
A pair of OHL graduates are riding double-digit NHL point streaks. London Knights graduate Mitch Marner of the Toronto Maple Leafs is in the midst of a career-high 14-game trend that dates back to Oct. 27th. The 25-year-old has 24 points (4-20–24) through 21 games this season. Former Kingston Frontenacs and Niagara IceDogs scorer Jason Robertson is on a 13-game streak for the Dallas Stars. The 23-year-old winger has scored two goals in each of his past two games, recording 16 goals, 15 assists and 31 points in 20 games.

The U SPORTS Report keeps tabs on former OHL names doing great things in the OUA, AUS and Canada West ranks on the road to the 2023 U SPORTS University Cup. Read more

Aleardi named ECHL Player of the Week:
OHL graduate Alex Aleardi of the Rapid City Rush is the ECHL Player of the Week. Aleardi scored two goals, added five assists and was a +7 in three games played last week. Aleardi has recorded 114 points (56-58-114) in 113 career ECHL games with Rapid City, Florida and Evansville. He has also added 41 points (20-21-41) in 92 career American Hockey League games with Springfield and Charlotte. Aleardi spent five seasons in the OHL, recording 227 points in 321 games between the Kitchener Rangers, Belleville Bulls, Plymouth Whalers and Windsor Spitfires.

Cavallin named ECHL Goaltender of the Week:
Flint Firebirds graduate Luke Cavallin of the Newfoundland Growlers has been named is the ECHL Goaltender of the Week. Cavallin went 2-0-0 with one shutout, a 1.94 goals-against average and a save percentage of .948 in two appearances last week. Under contract to Toronto of the American Hockey League, Cavallin is 7-0-0 for the Growlers this season. Cavallin saw action in 143 regular season OHL games with the Flint Firebirds, recording a 62-57-6 record with two shutouts, a 3.92 goals-against average and a save percentage of .889.
