Sault Ste. Marie, ON – Originally selected in the first round (52nd overall) of the 2017 CHL Import Draft, Swedish defenceman Rasmus Sandin will be joining the Soo Greyhounds.
GM Kyle Raftis officially announced on Wednesday that the 17-year old defenceman is expected to arrive in the Lock City ahead of the weekend.
“This is something we have been working towards for some time now,” Raftis noted. “We are very excited to have a resolution and add a player of Sandin’s calibre to our group. As an extremely intelligent puck moving defencemen it will be a great boost to our blueline moving forward.”
A native of Uppsala Sweden eligible for the 2018 NHL Draft, Sandin started the 2017-18 season with the Swedish Elite League’s Rogle BK where he registered one assist over five contests.
Sandin spent the 2016-17 season with Brynas of Sweden’s SuperElite League, the country’s top junior circuit. In 36 games he recorded three goals, 15 assists and 18 points.
Internationally, Sandin was a member of the gold-medal winning Swedish team at the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge where he notched two assists in six games played.
The newest Greyhound expressed his excitment in a release from his former club Rogle BK.
“It has been awesome to test games in SHL and measure against seniors,” he said. “I have had the desire to play in CHL for a long time and am glad that Rögle and Soo can agree. I look forward to developing even more and coming back to Ängelholm next season in an even bigger role.”
Sandin is expected to make his Greyhounds debut this coming Friday, October 20th when the club hosts the Kingston Frontenacs.
