Recapping 11 Spring Development Camps in May and June


Before prospective players embark on a summer of training and preparation for the 2019-20 season, 11 Ontario Hockey League teams hosted Spring Development Camps in May and the early parts of June featuring many of their recent additions through the 2019 OHL Priority Selection and Under-18 Draft.

The weekend events gave teams an opportunity to meet the newest members of their organization while offering prospects an early look at the communities and facilities they hope to call home in September.

Here’s a recap of the camps and highlights:


Guelph Storm – May 11

One day before capturing an OHL championship on home ice, the newest members of the Storm took part in a Development Camp in Guelph.

Peterborough Petes – May 11

Close to 30 of the Petes’ top prospects and free agent invites took part in some fitness testing then hit the ice for practice followed by a Maroon and White scrimmage.  These events followed the club’s annual Awards Banquet at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Saginaw Spirit – May 11 & 12

The Spirit welcomed 24 prospects to the Great Lakes Bay Region for the first time for two days of on ice workouts and practices, as well as a tour of the city of Saginaw for players and parents.  Following a banquet and jersey presentation on Friday, players were divided into Blue and White teams each with 12 forwards, eight defencemen, and four goaltenders taking part in position specific on-ice sessions on Saturday followed by small area games and 3-on-3 contests on Sunday.  Returning players Cole Perfetti, Tristan Lennox, Ethan Cardwell, and Ian Lemieux were also in attendance to meet the prospects and assist with the development sessions.

Sudbury Wolves – May 11 & 12

30 of the Pack’s newest members and their families gathered north for a two-day Orientation Camp that featured fitness testing followed by Blue and White practices on Saturday and a scrimmage on Sunday.

Erie Otters – May 18 & 19

The Otters annual Prospect Development Camp took place at the newly renovated ERIEBANK Sports Park with activities including fitness testing, on-ice development, and scrimmages between Team Navy and Team White.  The invitees and their families were given tours of the Erie Otters facilities inside the Erie Insurance Arena and the city of Erie and also shared in the club’s annual awards banquet on Sunday afternoon.

Flint Firebirds – May 17-19

The Firebirds welcomed 30 prospects to Flint for a weekend that featured fitness testing, three on-ice sessions, and tours of the Dort Federal Event Center and Flint and Genesee County.  Fans were invited to the annual tailgate party and Blue vs White Game on Saturday and had the opportunity to meet many of the prospective players as well as current Firebirds Michael Bianconi, Tyler Deline, Jake Durham, Marcus Gretz, Ethan Keppen, Connor Roberts, and Evan Vierling who were all in attendance.

Kingston Frontenacs – May 24 & 25

Players reported to Leon’s Centre on Friday night for an orientation session to open camp followed by fitness testing and photos on Saturday morning.  Players and their families got the opportunity to hear from Head Coach Kurtis Foster, Associate Coach Luca Caputi, Executive Director of Business Operations Justin Chenier, and defenceman Jakob Brahaney.

North Bay Battalion – May 24-26

A total of 39 skaters and goaltenders attended the North Bay Battalion’s orientation camp featuring 20 forwards, 14 defencemen, and five goaltenders.  Players reported for fitness testing on Friday then accompanied their parents on a 90-minute bus tour of North Bay.  Team Green and Team White hit the ice for two Saturday sessions then wrapped up with exit meetings on Sunday.

Soo Greyhounds – May 31 & June 1

Prospective players and their families gathered at Mastercard Centre in Toronto for a two-day Development Camp highlighted by on-ice training sessions and guests.

Niagara IceDogs – June 1

Future IceDogs and their families spent a full day in Niagara that began at breakfast with General Manager Joey Burke, Head Coach Billy Burke, Director of Scouting Roger MacLeod, Alternate Captain Akil Thomas, and first year forward Jonah De Simone.  Attendees then boarded the team’s bus and visited Governor Simcoe High School to hear from Academic Advisor and Guidance Counsellor Tim Tope, learned more about the billet program, and met Pastor Moe.  The orientation session ended with a tour of the Meridian Centre.

Owen Sound Attack – June 9

Attack prospects took part in the club’s annual Softball Tournament and Awards BBQ allowing fans the opportunity to celebrate the past season while meeting new and returning players.  Players in attendance were introduced as part of the festivities that included special jersey presentations.
