Recapping nine Spring Development Camps in April

 

Soon after the completion of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection and Under-18 Draft, nine Ontario Hockey League teams hosted Spring Development Camps in April.

The weekend events gave teams an opportunity to meet the newest members of their organization while offering prospects an early look at the communities and facilities they hope to call home in September.

Here’s a recap of the camps and highlights:

 

Barrie Colts – April 13 & 14

Divided into Teams Blue and White, Colts prospects took to the ice for a practice session on Saturday with Head Coach Dale Hawerchuk and Assistant Coach Todd Miller.  Off-ice components followed with Strength and Conditioning Coach Jimmy McKnight.  A dinner for players and families wrapped up the day at the Horsepower Bar and BBQ Grill before Sunday’s Blue and White game.

Hamilton Bulldogs – April 13 & 14

The future of the Hamilton Bulldogs was on display at Morgan Firestone Arena in Ancaster featuring off-ice testing an three different scrimmages that were open to fans throughout the weekend.

Ottawa 67’s – April 13 & 14

As the team prepared for the Eastern Conference Championship Series, prospects took part in two skill sessions led by Director of Player Development and Performance Derek Miller and his staff.  Goaltenders also took the ice for two development sessions with Goaltending Coach Charles McTavish and Goaltending Consultant Fred Brathwaite, while all players met with Strength & Conditioning Coach, Sean Young, and his team at Canadian Strength Institute for fitness testing and development.  Sunday’s action featured a game between players divided into squads named Team Shaw and Team Boynton.

Sarnia Sting – April 13 & 14

Prospects gathered at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena for a two-day orientation where Team Black and Team White members underwent fitness assessments, on-ice sessions, scrimmages, and a special jersey presentation event at Legends Restaurant.

Windsor Spitfires – April 13

Thirty-one recent draftees and free agents got the full Spitfires experience at a mini-camp full of energy and high-pace play at the WFCU Centre under the watchful eyes of GM Warren Rychel, Head Coach Trevor Letowski, and the rest of the Spitfires staff.

Kitchener Rangers – April 19-21

Players practiced, as well as played intrasquad games as members of Team White and Team Blue. All practices and games were held at Activa Sportsplex and were open to the public and have free admission.  Away from the ice, players took part in fitness testing, seminars, and received a tour of the Rangers facilities at The Aud.

London Knights – April 20 & 21

Prospects on Team Green and Team Gold assembled at the iconic Budweiser Gardens for a weekend highlighted by four scrimmages that were open to the public.

Mississauga Steelheads – April 20

As part of the Steelheads’ development program, players on Team Blue and Team White underwent 60-minute off-ice workouts,  80-minute on-ice session, video sessions and finish and a scrimmage at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre.

Oshawa Generals – April 20 & 21

With the Generals in Ottawa for the Eastern Conference Championship Series, Team Red and Team White prospects participated in fitness testing and competed in two scrimmages over the course of the weekend. Development partner Power Edge Pro was also at the camp to work with the players for skills and development for an on ice session with each team.
