Rollo, Wood emerge victorious in Petes NHL20 Esports Tournament

The Peterborough Petes took the plunge, launching an NHL 20 Esports tournament as players, prospects and alumni took part in a multi-round playdown on both the XBOX One and Playstation 4 consoles.

Games were streamed over the Petes’ Twitch channel as fans were able to see live action along with player dialogue over Zoom.

“They all thought it was pretty cool,” said Petes coordinator of communication and game operations Riley Maracle, who oversaw the tournament. “There were some logistical challenges we had to sort through to get things started, but once those were looked after things ran smoothly and the guys had a lot of fun with it.

“It was a great way to bring guys throughout our organization together to have a good time.”

The PS4 Division drew to a close on Tuesday, with Petes alumnus and Brock University men’s hockey forward Tyler Rollo‘s Winnipeg Jets defeating local product and Petes U18 AAA forward Boyd Stahlbaum’s New York Islanders. Rollo’s road to glory included other playoff wins over Eli Palfreyman’s Washington Capitals and Shawn Spearing‘s San Jose Sharks.

Petes eighth round 2019 OHL Priority Selection choice and Strathroy Rockets Jr. B forward Riley Wood came out on top in the XBOX Division that wrapped up last week. Wood and the Chicago Blackhawks defeated Petes alumnus Greg Betzold‘s Toronto Maple Leafs before edging 2020 second round OHL Under-18 Priority Selection choice Luke LaPalm and the Florida Panthers.

The event went so well, the Petes are opening things up to fans.

“We’ll be holding an Esports Tournament for fans interested in signing up,” said Maracle. “It’ll be limited to PlayStation 4 console users and fans can go head-to-head and compete for prizes including a Petes game worn jersey.”

The cost to enter the tournament is $10 + HST. Fans must be 13 years of age or older and must own NHL 20 for PS4. Registration information, full rules, and frequently asked questions can be found at gopetesgo.com.
