Saturday Highlights: Lorentz scores four in a flash

PETERBOROUGH 5 – NORTH BAY 3
The Peterborough Petes took over first place in the East Division as Carolina Hurricanes prospect Steven Lorentz (14, 15, 16, 17) scored four straight third period goals in an epic 5-3 comeback over the visiting North Bay Battalion. Lorentz recorded a natural hat-trick in a span of 9:13 before adding an empty netter to seal the deal and improve the Petes to 25-15-1-3. Matyas Svoboda (7) also scored for Peterborough while Nikita Korostelev and Semyon Der-Arguchintsev each had a pair of assists. Lorentz and teammate Zach Gallant went a combined 29 of 35 (83%) in the faceoff circle. Justin Brazeau (13), Rhys Forhan (1) and Brett McKenzie (20) responded with goals for the Battalion who outshot the Petes 38-32. North Bay head coach Stan Butler coached his 1,400th career OHL game, the most of any active coach in the league today. Lorentz’ four goal showing is the most by a Petes player in one game since Nick Ritchie’s franchise record five on February 7, 2014.

OWEN SOUND 6 – BARRIE 2
The Owen Sound Attack won their 14th straight game in commanding style, taking a 6-2 road win over the Barrie Colts to improve to 30-13-1-0 on the season. Overage veteran Cordell James (17) had a goal and two assists against his former club while Maksim Sushko (12, 13), Petrus Palmu (26), Markus Phillips (9) and Ethan Szypula (7) also got on the scoresheet. Roy Radke (9) and Giordano Finoro (9) scored in the loss for Barrie as the Colts were outshot 39-22. Owen Sound’s fifth ranked power play went 3-for-4 on the night.

SARNIA 7 – SAULT STE. MARIE 3
The Sarnia Sting stopped the OHL’s top ranked Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Sportsnet, exploding out of the gate for a 5-0 lead en-route to a 7-3 decision. Overage winger Jaden Lindo (15, 16) scored twice and had an assist while Franco Sproviero (7, 8) also scored twice. Other Sarnia goals came from Anthony Salinitri (18), Jordan Kyrou (18) and Drake Rymsha (18). The Sting scored seven times on 34 shots including a pair of shorthanded goals. Tim Gettinger (22), Hayden Verbeek (8) and Blake Speers (5) scored for the Greyhounds. Sarnia goaltender Justin Fazio made 32 saves in the win as the Sting pull to within four points of sixth place Kitchener in the Western Conference.

HAMILTON 2 – KINGSTON 0
Kaden Fulcher recorded a 26-save shutout as the Hamilton Bulldogs claimed two big points against the visiting Kingston Frontenacs, blanking them 2-0 at FirstOntario Centre. First period goals from Matt Luff (15) and Ben Gleason (4) were enough to power the Bulldogs to their seventh win in the last 10 games as they gain two points on the Frontenacs for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Carolina Hurricanes prospect Jeremy Helvig made 22 saves at the other end as the Fronts saw their undefeated run in regulation come to an end at four games.

ERIE 4 – FLINT 1
Troy Timpano turned aside 37 of the 38 shots he faced, leading the Erie Otters to a 4-1 road win in Flint. The Otters held the Firebirds to just 1-for-12 on the man advantage, with several big saves coming from Timpano in the process. Christian Girhiny (9), Ivan Lodnia (20), Taylor Raddysh (27) and Erik Cernak (1) all scored for Erie as the Otters were outshot 38-28. Luke Kirwan (14) scored Flint’s lone goal. Erie is currently locked in a three-way tie for second place in the Western Conference with London and Windsor as all three clubs currently have 65 points. Otters captain Dylan Strome was out of the lineup for a second straight night due to illness.

WINDSOR 2 – NIAGARA 1
The Windsor Spitfires remained undefeated in regulation for a sixth straight game as 2017 NHL Draft prospect Michael DiPietro made 33 saves in a 2-1 win over the visiting Niagara IceDogs. Sean Day (12) and Logan Brown (12) scored first period goals, powering the Spits to within two points of first place Sault Ste. Marie in the West Division. IceDogs netminder Stephen Dhillon made 32 saves at the other end as Niagara had a goal from Czech forward Ondrej Machala (5) in the loss. The IceDogs remain tied with North Bay for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
