Saturday Highlights: Otters win big, clinch playoff berth

ERIE 9 – SAGINAW 4
The Erie Otters are off to the playoffs once again, defeating the visiting Saginaw Spirit 9-4 as Chicago Blackhawks prospect Alex DeBrincat became the third player in franchise history to record 300 career points. DeBrincat (45) had a goal and three assists while Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Taylor Raddysh (32, 33) had two goals and two helpers as the Otters won their ninth straight game. Mitchell Byrne (2), Christian Girhiny (10), Anthony Cirelli (18), Dylan Strome (13), Kyle Pettit (23) and Ivan Lodnia (22) also had markers while Kyle Maksimovich registered four assists. Erie outshot Saginaw 43-26 as Spirit goals came from Matthew Kreis (9), Keaton Middleton (2), Brady Gilmour (21) and Marcus Crawford (4). The Otters and division rival London Knights both secured playoff berths on Saturday as they sit tied atop the Western Conference with 79 points each.

HAMILTON 6 – WINDSOR 3
Brandon Saigeon’s (13, 14, 15) first OHL hat-trick led the Hamilton Bulldogs to a 6-3 home ice win over the Windsor Spitfires. Michael Cramarossa (16) helped set up Saigeon throughout the night, registering a goal and three assists as the Bulldogs pulled to within a point of fourth place Kingston in the Eastern Conference. Marian Studenic (13) and Matt Luff (18) also had goals while Dawson Carty made 25 saves and the Bulldogs went 3-for-3 on the power play. Gabriel Vilardi (20) had a goal and an assist in the loss for Windsor while Mikhail Sergachev (7) and Graham Knott (11) also found twine. With Sault Ste. Marie also losing on Saturday, the Spits remain within four points of first place in the West Division.

PETERBOROUGH 4 – BARRIE 1
Chris Paquette (17), Jonathan Ang (20), Steven Lorentz (20) and Adam Timleck (13) all scored as the Peterborough Petes took a 4-1 road win over the Barrie Colts. Edmonton Oilers prospect Dylan Wells stopped 28 of 29 shots that came his way as the Petes won their third straight contest and improved to 32-16-2-3. Kyle Jenkins and Logan DeNoble both had a pair of assists as Peterborough outshot Barrie 38-29. Chicago Blackhawks prospect Roy Radke (14) scored Barrie’s lone goal while Ruan Badenhorst made 34 saves.

NIAGARA 4 – NORTH BAY 0
Stephen Dhillon turned away 30 shots to record his first shutout of the season as the Niagara IceDogs blanked the visiting North Bay Battalion 4-0. Niagara’s nine game skid comes to an end as Justin Brack (3, 4) scored twice while Ryan Mantha (13) and Kirill Maksimov (11) also scored and Akil Thomas and Johnny Corneil registered two assists. Niagara outshot North Bay 54-30, going 2-for-10 on the power play. The Battalion, who have suffered a rash of injuries of late, suffered their fourth straight loss. Brent Moran turned in a 50-save performance against his former club.

OWEN SOUND 10 – OTTAWA 5
The Owen Sound Attack doubled up the Ottawa 67’s in an old fashioned shootin’ match as Jonah Gadjovich (29, 30, 31) recorded his third hat-trick of the season in a 10-5 road win. The Attack went up 6-0 before Ottawa found some offence to make a game of things. Matthew Struthers (6, 7) and Chase Campbell (13, 14) scored twice for Owen Sound while rookie Aidan Dudas (8) had a goal and two assists. Matt Schmalz (13) and Kevin Hancock (24) also had tallies as the Bears won their third straight. Ottawa goals came from Jared Steege (14), Travis Barron (10), Noel Hoefenmayer (11, 12) and Zack Dorval (5). The Attack outshot the 67’s 33-19, going 2-for-3 on the power play.

FLINT 5 – SAULT STE. MARIE 3
The Flint Firebirds put a stop to the Soo Greyhounds’ three-game winning streak as Jake Durham (7) scored the third period winner in a 5-3 road triumph. Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Kole Sherwood (27) had a goal and an assist while Alex Peters (7), Jalen Smereck (7) and Nicholas Caamano (26) also tallied. The Firebirds outshot the Hounds 35-23, putting an end to goaltender Matthew Villalta’s 16-game winning streak. The Greyhounds were held to 1-for-8 on the power play and surrendered a pair of shorthanded markers as Blake Speers (10), Zach Senyshyn (33) and Boris Katchouk (26) had goals in the loss. The Firebirds are undefeated in regulation in five straight games and move to seven points ahead of Saginaw for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
