Saturday Highlights: Overtime heroes emerge

GUELPH 5 BARRIE 4 OT
Nate Schnarr orchestrated a nifty overtime winner, stripping a puck free from a Barrie defender to set up Noah Carroll (2) on the doorstep for the finish as the Guelph Storm took a 5-4 win in Barrie. Colts forward Anthony Stefano (6) scored with 2:40 remaining in the third period to force overtime before the Storm sealed the deal on their fifth win of the season. Isaac Ratcliffe (4, 5) scored twice while Matt Hotchkiss (5) and Garrett McFadden (2) also tallied for Guelph. Kirill Nizhnikov (2), Matt Brassard (3) and Cordell James (7) also had goals for the Colts. Barrie defenders Tom Hedberg and Justin Murray each had two assists in the loss.

SAULT STE. MARIE 4 OTTAWA 3 OT
Hayden Verbeek set up Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Boris Katchouk (3) for the overtime winner as the Soo Greyhounds defeated visiting Ottawa 4-3. Bobby MacIntyre (6) led the way with a goal and two assists while Otto Makinen (2) and Tim Gettinger (3) also tallied for the Greyhounds. Drake Rymsha (7), Patrick White (5) and Jared Steege (1) scored for Ottawa. Sault Ste. Marie took the shooting column 39-23 as Ottawa’s Olivier Lafreniere turned aside 35 shots in the loss. The win sees the Hounds improve to 8-4-1-0, tying them for first in the West Division.

NORTH BAY 3 HAMILTON 2 OT
Brent Moran provided a big save at one end before Steve Harland (2) blasted the overtime winner into the net at the other as the North Bay Battalion took a 3-2 overtime road win in Hamilton. Arizona Coyotes prospect Cam Dineen (4) tied the score at two with a minute remaining in the third period to force overtime before the Troops took a hard-fought win. Kyle Potts (2) also scored for the Battalion while Moran made 20 saves in goal. Hamilton goals came from Marian Studenic (4) and Matthew Strome (8). North Bay outshot Hamilton 33-22 as Bulldogs goaltender Cole Ceci made 30 saves on the night.

SAGINAW 3 KINGSTON 2
Linus Nyman (4, 5) scored twice and the Kingston Frontenacs outshot Saginaw 33-13, but the Spirit would come out on top 3-2 on Pink Out Night at the Dow Event Center. Rookie forward Damien Giroux (2) had a goal and an assist while Hayden Hodgson (2) and Jesse Barwell (1) also scored as the Spirit snapped a three game skid. New Jersey Devils prospect Evan Cormier made 31 saves to secure the win as the Spirit improve to 2-7-1-1.

FLINT 4 WINDSOR 1
The Windsor Spitfires got on the board to end the first period but the Flint Firebirds roared back with four unanswered in a 4-1 home ice victory. Former Spitfire Luke Kirwan (7), Everett Clark (4), Dane Johnstone (1) and Hunter Holmes (1) all scored as the Firebirds added a pair of empty netters to cap off a very competitive contest. Gabriel Vilardi (5) scored the lone goal for the Spitfires, who were outshot 37-24 in the loss.

ERIE 5 OWEN SOUND 2
Darren Raddysh (2) scored the winning goal on the power play with 4:41 remaining as the Erie Otters got by the Owen Sound Attack 5-2 on home ice. Kyle Pettit (2) and Gera Poddubynyi (2) also scored before Alex DeBrincat (10) and Taylor Raddysh (9) added empty netters. Kevin Hancock (4) and Ethan Szypula (3) scored for the Attack, who split their weekend back-to-back set in Erie. The Otters improve to a Midwest Division leading 8-3-1-0.
