Thursday Highlights: Dogs deliver on Opening Night

The Niagara IceDogs unfurled their 2019 Central Division banner and proceeded to play like champions, doubling-up the visiting Sudbury Wolves 6-3 before a crowd of 4,753 in St. Catharines. Christian Purboo’s Sudbury Wolves debut was a brief one as the IceDogs scored three times on six shots to end his night prematurely. Kyen Sopa scored the first goal of the 2019-20 season 1:51 into action before Oliver Castleman and Jake Uberti added first period goals. Phil Tomasino would tack on two with an empty netter while Andrew Bruder also found the back of the net. Tucker Tynan relieved an injured Christian Sbaraglia in the third period to earn the win, turning aside 11 of the 12 shots he faced. Sudbury’s Quinton Byfield was a bright spot for the Wolves as the top 2020 NHL Draft prospect recorded two goals and an assist. He set up defenceman Jack Thompson for Sudbury’s other goal. The Wolves outshot the IceDogs 44-38 on the night but Niagara went 2-for-3 on the power play to start their season off right.
