Tuesday Highlights: Knights skate past Rangers to extend win streak

Washington Capitals first rounder Connor McMichael led the way with a goal and two assists as the London Knights skated past the Kitchener Rangers 6-2 in the final matchup of the season between the Midwest Division rivals. London came soaring with first period goals from Minnesota Wild prospect Matvey Guskov (14), NHL Draft eligible Luke Evangelista (23) and San Jose Sharks pick Ryan Merkley (15), who scored with 46 seconds left in the opening frame to give his team an early 3-0 lead. Overager Liam Hawel (22) earned one for the Rangers but McMichael (43) struck next to reclaim the Knights’ three goal lead. Ottawa Senators draftee Jonathan Gruden followed suit 10 seconds later with his 30th on the season. Mike Petizian (20) got Kitchener on the board once more within the final frame and London overager Jason Willms (22) found the back of the net with less than three minutes remaining to extend his team’s goal cushion to the final buzzer. The Knights posted 41 shots on Kitchener goaltenders Jacob Ingham and Lucas Pfeil, while London rookie Brett Brochu saved 19 of the 21 shots he faced for his seventh straight win and 30th on the year. The Rangers, who continue to own the West Division’s second place seed, drop to 38-15-5-2 as their win skid comes to a halt. London’s fourth straight victory bumps them up to 42-15-1-1 at the top of the Western Conference.
