U18 Worlds Primer: Brett Harrison (Oshawa Generals)

Looking to medal at the U18 Worlds for the first time since 2015, the Canadian squad will rely on OHL forwards like Oshawa Generals centreman Brett Harrison as they take on the world’s best. Harrison demonstrated an ability to play both centre and the wing during his rookie OHL season in 2019-20, and brings a 6-foot-1 frame and good stride to the Canadian lineup. He becomes the first Generals player to suit up for Canada at the U18 Worlds since Allan McShane and Serron Noel competed in Russia in 2018.

Harrison has produced offensively at every level on his journey through the minor hockey ranks. He led the ALLIANCE U16 loop with 42 goals and 63 points before being chosen by the Generals with the 16th overall pick of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection. He didn’t skip a beat as an OHL rookie, providing the Generals with secondary scoring punch as one of four League freshmen with over 20 goals. His 21 gave him the most by a Generals 15 or 16-year-old rookie since John Tavares‘ impressive 45 in 2005-06.

In the absence of OHL action, Harrison suited up in Finland’s junior ranks with KOOVEE U20 based out of Tampere. He put up nine points (4-5–9) over seven contests and got into one game with KOOVEE’s professional squad in the Mestis circuit.

Harrison hails from Dorchester, Ont., the same hometown as Generals great and current Columbus Blue Jackets forward Boone Jenner who played in Oshawa from 2009-13. Harrison’s 21 goals as a rookie were just above Jenner’s 19 when he skated as a 16-year-old in 2009-10.

Harrison and 12 other OHL players will hit the ice in Plano and Frisco, Texas  on April 27th when Canada opens its tournament schedule against Sweden.
