Wednesday Highlights: Guzda stands tall as Attack shutout Sting

OWEN SOUND 5, SARNIA 0
Mack Guzda recorded his second shutout of the season and fifth of his OHL career, stopping all 30 attempts in a 5-0 blanking of the visiting Sarnia Sting. The Attack saw goals from Sergey Popov (10) and Los Angeles Kings prospect Aidan Dudas (12) before Barret Kirwin (20) and Brady Lyle (13) struck on the power play. Matthew Philip (18) capped off the win with his team’s fifth and final goal, and Matthew Struthers picked up three assists on the night. This was the third of four matchups between the two teams, and the Attack now lead the season series 2-1-0-0. A fourth straight loss from the Sting drops their record to 16-25-4-0 at the bottom of the West Division, and the Attack improve to 21-17-3-3 in the Midwest’s fourth place slot.

FLINT 7, SOO 4
Four-point nights from Riley Piercey and Dallas Stars prospect Ty Dellandrea lifted the Flint Firebirds past the Soo Greyhounds in a 7-4 contest Wednesday night. Jake Durham (18) and Piercey (13) gave Flint an early 2-0 lead, until third year Greyhound Joe Carroll (11) cut it in half less than a minute later. Dellandrea (21) widened the gap, but Carroll (12, 13) collected two more to complete his first OHL hat-trick and tie the score 3-3. Jack Phibbs’ 11th goal came on a successful penalty shot to reclaim the Flint lead before Dellandrea (22) notched his second of the game to extend it to 5-3. NHL Draft prospect Jaromir Pytlik (15) found the back of the net for Soo’s fourth and final marker, and late goals from Piercey (14) and St. Louis Blues pick Tyler Tucker (10) came within the game’s final minutes. The shots totaled 32-29 in favour of the Greyhounds, who have now dropped four games in a row. They hover fourth in the West Division with a 20-22-2-0 tally to their name, while the Firebirds hit 50 points with their second straight win and a 24-17-1-1 record. Flint now holds a 4-1-0-0 record against the Soo through their first five of six tilts this season.
