Wolves Announce Hockey Operations Changes

Sudbury Wolves

Sudbury, ON – The Sudbury Wolves Hockey Club today announce that Head Coach David Matsos will be leaving the hockey club effective immediately.  Matsos and the Wolves have mutually agreed to part ways.

Matsos joined the Sudbury Wolves in July, 2013 as Associate Coach. Prior to joining the Wolves, Matsos spent three seasons as an Assistant Coach with the Windsor Spitfires.  He took over as Interim Head Coach in January 2015, replacing Paul Fixter, before being named as the permanent Head Coach prior to the 2015-2016 season.

“First and foremost, David is a tremendous person and we thank him for everything he has done during his time in Greater Sudbury for our community and our hockey club,” said Wolves General Manager and VP of Hockey Operations Rob Papineau. “We considered options on contract extensions but we were unable to come to an agreement moving forward.  In the end, we agreed to allow David to pursue other opportunities in the game that can provide better stability for himself and his family.”

“I have appreciated the opportunity to lead the Sudbury Wolves” stated Matsos.  “My family and I have enjoyed living in Sudbury immensely, the passion of the fans, and above all else, the many players that I have coached.  I wish all of them success in their future.”

In addition, Assistant Coach Barry Smith will also no longer be with the team. “We want to thank Barry for coming to Sudbury mid-season and filling the void left when Drake (Berehowsky) moved to Orlando.”  Papineau said.  “The next Head Coach will have the opportunity to be involved in the selection of his primary Associate Coach.”

The hockey club also is confirming that Assistant Coach, Darryl Moxam will remain with the team in his current role.
