Tavares to be selected first overall in OHL Priority Selection

The Oshawa Generals in conjunction with the Ontario Hockey League today announced that John Tavares of Oakville, Ontario will be taken number one overall in the 2005 OHL Priority Selection on Saturday.

Tavares will receive the Jack Ferguson Award as the first player taken overall in the 2005 OHL Priority Selection. All other team selections will be announced during the 2005 OHL Priority Selection, which will commence at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday May 7.

Tavares, a left-shooting centre/left winger scored 91 goals and 67 assists for 158 points to go along with 62 penalty minutes in 72 games with the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midgets of the GTHL during the 2004-05 season. He added six goals and eight points in five games to help the Marlies win the OHL Cup Showcase Tournament in March. Tavares also played in 20 games with the Tier II Milton Merchants, scoring 13 goals and 15 assists for 28 points.

“The Oshawa Generals are proud to be selecting John Tavares as our first overall pick on Saturday,” said Generals’ General Manager Brad Selwood. “John is a gifted individual who will have a tremendous impact in the OHL. This is great news for our team, our fans, and the City of Oshawa.”

The OHL, in association with Internet Light and Power, a Toronto-based Internet service provider, has developed a custom application that will be used to facilitate the Internet draft process for the fifth consecutive year. Fans and media will be able to follow the Priority Selection in real time on the OHL’s official web site – The web site will feature the Priority Selection results by round, by team and alphabetically and will include selected player information and photographs.

The OHL web site will also feature expanded coverage of the Priority Selection, including player interviews and a special live edition of OHL News – Radio Edition with Terry Doyle. The program will run from 9:00 a.m. through 12:00 noon with special interviews with Tavares, as well as other selected players, team personnel and OHL Central Scouts.

Jack Ferguson Award History

The “Fergie” is presented annually to the player selected first overall in the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection. The award recognizes the dedication and contributions made by Jack Ferguson during his 25 year association with the Ontario Hockey League, first as a scout with the Ottawa 67’s and followed by his appointment as head of the OHL’s Central Scouting Bureau in 1981 as its Director of Central Scouting.
