The Niagara IceDogs paid tribute to captain and Canadian National Junior Team third period hero Akil Thomas prior to puck drop on Thursday night as they played host to the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Thomas, who will join the Peterborough Petes following the OHL Trade Deadline, finished second in Niagara IceDogs career assists with 179 for a total of 275 points over 219 career regular season games. The Los Angeles Kings second round pick scored the third period game winner to lift Canada over Russia in the gold medal game of the 2020 World Junior Hockey Championship in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Several local constituents came together to declare January 9, 2020 Akil Thomas Day in the Niagara Region prior to the game.
