The Flint Firebirds carried the momentum of a turnaround season into the 2017 OHL Priority Selection using their first three picks to address all three positions.
With three picks in the top-30, the Firebirds chose impact players up front, on the back end, and in goal on draft day and have since received commitments from all three of their top prospects for the second straight year.
A big part of the club’s future on offense is power forward Ethan Keppen chosen 10th overall who averaged more than a point-per-game with the Toronto Nationals this season leading them to a berth in the OHL Cup Final. Defenceman and Michigan native Marcus Gretz of Detroit Belle Tire was chosen 23rd overall, followed by Luke Cavallin of the Kemptville 73’s who was the first goaltender off the board in 2017 going 28th overall. The club also recently announced the commitment of defenceman Zack Pilon, a fourth round pick to add to their nucleus of 2017 prospects.
In addition, the Firebirds also recently received commitment from 2016 second round pick Jack Wismer, a forward who played his minor midget year with the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs.
Off the ice, Barclay Branch was appointed new Vice-President of Hockey Operations and General Manager following the departure of George Burnett.
Keppen and Cavallin will represent the Firebirds at Hockey Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-17 Selection Camp in Calgary on July 22nd.
