The defending Mastercard Memorial Cup champions reigned supreme in their home opener on Thursday, carrying their winning tradition over into 2017-18 with a 3-1 victory over the Saginaw Spirit. After Saginaw blueliner Marcus Crawford (1) scored the first goal of the 2017-18 OHL season, the Spits collected three unanswered from Luke Boka (1), Luke Kutkevicius (1) and recently signed overage forward Jake Smith (1). Captain Aaron Luchuk brought the Memorial Cup to centre ice in a pre-game ceremony at the WFCU Centre and proceeded to collect a pair of assists in the win. Michael DiPietro made 26 saves in his return from Vancouver Canucks training camp, helping hold Saginaw’s power play to 0-for-6 on the night. New Jersey Devils prospect Evan Cormier took the loss despite a 32-save effort.
